Ryan Gosling Wears an Ab-Baring Fringe Vest in New “Barbie Trailer”

Greta Gerwig’s live-action “Barbie” stars Margot Robbie as the iconic character and Ryan Gosling as boyfriend Ken. Gosling even bleached his hair platinum blond to slip into the look. The Warner Bros. movie, which released stills on June 15, has now shown a glimpse of official footage in the first teaser trailer, where Ken’s cowboy persona is amplified in a fringe leather vest that puts his toned stomach on display.
Jacqueline Durran – famous for her work on “Spencer,” “Little Women,” and the live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast” – is behind the incredible costume design. While she famously collaborated with the Chanel Couture house for Kristen Stewart’s outfits in “Spencer,” there will likely be plenty of studio-made pieces for “Barbie,” as proven by the one-of-a-kind looks Robbie and Gosling have already been spotted in while filming on set in LA and Venice Beach, CA.
Barbie’s retro style is re-created almost to a T, as shown by Robbie’s 1959-inspired black-and-white strapless swimsuit in the trailer, along with the getup she models in a film still. Sitting in her iconic convertible, Robbie wears a blue-and-white striped halter top with a sweetheart neckline; a thick, polka-dot headband; and a chunky beaded bracelet. Meanwhile, Ken gets his own Calvin Klein-inspired branded underwear, with the waistband peeking out prominently from his denim-on-denim coordinates. The couple also sports Western rodeo outfits, complete with fringe and intricate embroidery, as well as neon ‘90s rollerblading sets – and the complementary his-and-her costumes surely will not end there.
Gerwig’s “Barbie” is, in part, responsible for the excitement surrounding the Barbiecore aesthetic in fashion, which is also founded on the resurgence of popular ’90s and Y2K trends. With stars like Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly serving up pink looks on the red carpet and Cardi B and Lizzo wearing head-to-toe pink in the streets, Barbie fashion inspiration is everywhere this season.
Robbie and Gosling bring back the most original iterations of the look ahead. Watch this space as we gather even more pictures of their wardrobe from upcoming scenes in anticipation of the film’s release on July 21, 2023.
