Fall is undoubtedly my favorite season in New York City, but early fall weather can be about as unpredictable as the subway schedule after midnight. Hot and humid one minute, crisp and cool the next – the weather makes picking out an outfit can seem like a guessing game. On the days when it’s a bit too warm for cozy cords but too chilly for shorts, I reach for the one thing in my closet that fits the bill: a swingy mini dress with long sleeves.

Breezy enough for surprisingly hot afternoons yet covered-up enough for cool evenings, the long-sleeved mini dress truly the perfect transitional piece. In early fall, I’d keep the outfit simple with ankle boots and a cross-body bag. As the weather turns colder, I’ll add layers like black tights, knee-high boots, and a leather jacket for extra warmth and a cozier vibe.
