I’m a Cynical Beauty Editor, and I Thought I’d Hate These Skincare Products

January 29, 2022 at 06:30AM I’ll admit, as a beauty editor who struggles with acne, I’m particular cynical and stubborn when it comes to skincare. Even with a deep understanding of ingredients and the skin’s basic functions, I have fallen for false claims and have been overpromised results more times than I would like to admit. Over the years, I have drawn up a list in my head of the sorts of skincare products I try to steer clear of, including anything rich in essential oils, anything dubbed “clean” or “natural” and anything that has a whole lot of Instagram hype based on how it looks. And while I know that this list is very specific to me and that others will get along with such products just fine, I have found they almost always leave me disappointed. It sounds snobby and stubborn of me, I…

I Just Found So Many Chic Homeware Buys From H&M, Zara Home and M&S

January 29, 2022 at 06:45AM Over the past few years, we’ve seen a shift in the interiors retail market. Previously, you’d have to go to specific stores to find homeware to fill your flat or house with, but now, thanks to an influx of high-street stores that now dabble in interiors, it’s never been easier (or more affordable) to find new pieces for your home. While many shops have interior offerings these days, there are three hot spots we find ourselves returning to again and again when we’re in need of a homeware fix: H&M Home, Marks and Spencer and Zara Home. And we would go as far as to say they have some of the best high-street homeware we’ve seen. With everything from furniture to lighting, dinnerware to decorative accessories, M&S, Zara and H&M’s respective homeware departments stock absolutely everything you need to bestow your…

From Alexa Chung to Kate Middleton, Almost Every British It Girl Has This Jacket

January 29, 2022 at 06:02AM What makes British fashion so special is its heritage; our past is a rich (incredibly chic) tapestry of skilled makers and designers, with brands born long ago proving to be just as popular today. And one of those brands is Barbour. Though founded in 1845, Barbour has been creating the timeless wax jackets and outwear for which it is known since 1910, and honestly, very little about the design has changed, which is a good thing. Of course, modern updates have been made, but at their heart, their aesthetic and, as such, appeal ring true. But what is it that makes the Barbour jacket—a jacket designed for fishing in, no less—so iconic? Perhaps it’s its illustrious fan base. Princess Diana wears a longline Barbour jacket. Anyone who has watched the latest season of The Crown will know that the Barbour jacket was effectively a character…

I’m a Picky Shopper, But I Can’t Believe How Premium These Zara Buys Look

January 29, 2022 at 06:00AM I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that, as a shopping editor, I can be pretty damn picky when it comes to clothes. While it’s not a prerequisite of the job, there is something about having an overview of the many collections and brands, both high-street and designer, that are available at any given moment that really focuses the brain on finding only the best possible pieces. Case in point: Zara is known for its generous online offering, which, while great for choice, is not always so good for concise edits. That’s where I come in.I will happily while away hours scrolling through various online new-in sections, each page with the potential to yield a hidden gem. It’s all about the thrill of the chase. My trick is to keep an eye out for prints, silhouettes or colourways that feel unusual (but not novelty) and…

This Is The Super Effective Facial I Get Before Any Big Event

January 29, 2022 at 06:00AM I’m not great with facials. Massages, yes, adore, cupping? Sign me up, but facials weren’t something I regularly book in for. Well, I never used to. And then I tried a Facegym workout. FaceGym is based on the concept of working out but for your face; sculpting and depuffing with a warm-up, vigorous exercise and a cool down. It’s not at all relaxing but effective, hell yes. It was after my first visit to FaceGym’s Selfridges branch that I realised what I didn’t like about a lot of other facials I have had, they tend to feel like nice massages, this one I could actually see and feel a difference. As an intro to the Facegym menu, I got their Signature Sculpt and it’s what got me hooked. I’m lucky enough to get to try a variety of treatments…

From Midi Skirts to Blazers: 11 Elevated Basics We’ve Tried and Loved

January 29, 2022 at 06:00AM Our We Try Before You Buy series aims to take the stress out of shopping and eliminate the number of post office visits you make each month to return failed online orders. We test new-season buys and styling ideas so you don’t have to. Here, we’re letting you know what’s actually worth investing in or styling tricks you can re-create with pieces you already own. We fashion editors love a good wardrobe categorisation. We revel in our partywear pairings, spend years compiling the ultimate basics capsule and approach accessories with military levels of organisation. But just like the seasonal confines of bi-annual fashion collections, our regimented approach to clothes is starting to be brought into question. With traditional workwear struggling to find its footing post-lockdown and the rapid rise of loungewear to Zoom’s shoulders-up styling, there’s no denying that fashion has had a bit of an identity crisis over the last two years. Yet on the flip side, it has also…

I Just Tried On M&S’s Best-Selling Jeans, and I’m Officially a Convert

January 29, 2022 at 06:00AM Okay, I admit it. When it comes to buying denim these days, I’m a bit of a snob. I spent my early 20s trying every high-street style I could find, going through God knows how many pairs of Topshop Jonis and Jamies. Once I hit my 30s, I gave up and started investing in fewer, more considered (read: expensive) pairs, hoping this was the solution to finding the holy grail of perfect jeans.I’ve definitely found a few really great go-tos, but like all of us, I’m still constantly on the lookout for a better pair. And while I presumed my high-street denim days were behind me, it was a recent Who What Wear team Slack discussion around everyone’s favourite jeans that had me reluctantly reconsidering. The verdict was that Marks and Spencer jeans are seriously impressive. Our contributing beauty editor Shannon Lawlor says it’s…
