The Best Looks from Fashion Art Toronto

May 09, 2022 at 08:49PM At Fashion Art Toronto — the city’s longest-running fashion week — the message was clear: fortune and fashion favour the bold. What does that look like exactly? Think oversized and deconstructed puffers, gender-bending wedding dresses, athletic-looking corsets, men in scantily clad thongs and bold, monochromatic colours. Now, even if this isn’t necessarily your aesthetic, to be immersed in fun and fearless runway looks was truly a joyful experience. You could taste the blood, sweat and tears that these Toronto designers have poured into their work, and their excitement at being back to IRL events was palpable. Not to mention, it’s always great to be reminded of just how much talent there is in Canada, with special shoutouts to Charles Lu (from Netflix’s Next in Fashion) and Mic Carter for creating the two must-see collections of the week. In…

Pink Took Over the BAFTA TV Awards Red Carpet

May 09, 2022 at 08:07PM Pink has never really been my colour. Whenever I wear it, I feel less like Barbie and more like a wad of bubblegum on the sidewalk (that is, unappealing). But after Valentino’s Pink Fall 22 collection permeated Paris Fashion Week and spilled out onto the red carpets (take Sebastian Stan’s Met Gala suit as one example), I’ve been convinced to give this joyful hue another chance. Pink is widely considered to be universally flattering, but choosing the right shade based on your skin’s undertone is the key to pulling it off. I must have missed this memo, but celebrities on the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet did not. Exhibit A: Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, who looked perfectly flushed in her Valentino haute couture gown. Other pretty in pink attendees included actor Céline Buckens in a Giorgio Armani dress,…

Here’s What You Should Know About Red Dress Day

May 05, 2022 at 09:59PM Every year at the start of May, red dresses can be seen hanging from trees, statues and front doors across Canada. These hollow vermilion silhouettes are not just fashionable foliage, but a reminder of the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people. The National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) is widely recognized as Red Dress Day, and Canadians are encouraged to hang and wear red as a means of drawing attention to gendered and racialized crimes against Indigenous peoples. @spicybkilla May 5th!! And as a guest, it can be tricky to find the right outfit. Of course, you don’t want to upstage the bride or groom, but weddings are meant to be a celebration, so why wouldn’t you show up and show out? Depending on the couple, the event can be anything from an intimate backyard ceremony to a glamorous affair. According to Pinterest, this wedding season is predicted to be the busiest on record, with many couples making up for cancelled or postponed nuptials. In terms of trends, goth- and enchanted forest-themed weddings are on the rise, while many couples are embracing their cultural and religious backgrounds. But back to the question at hand: What should you wear as a wedding guest in 2022? Vintage and secondhand stores are fantastic sources when it comes to…

Who is the Real Anna Wintour? This New Biography Tries to Find Out

May 05, 2022 at 06:21PM How do you even begin to write an Anna Wintour biography? This is the question that plagued Amy Odell, Cosmopolitan.com’s former editor and creator of The Cut, back in 2018. “I thought that was an opportunity to separate Anna, the icon, from Anna, the actual person,” she says over the phone. And that’s precisely what this book does — it demystifies the woman hidden behind the bob and designer sunglasses. In fact, the very first page is about the protagonist crying at a staff meeting the morning after Donald Trump was elected President of the United States in 2016. Anna: The Biography feels like the final book in a three-part series of iconic fashion figure tell-alls — the first being Grace Coddington’s 2012 memoir and then Andre Leon Talley’s biting autobiography in 2020. To be sure, Wintour’s rise…

May 05, 2022 at 05:16PM “Fun” was how actress Kristen Stewart summed up the Chanel 2022/2023 Cruise collection shown May 5 at the Monte-Carlo Beach Club just outside Monaco. “There’s something about watching high heels and a bathing suit walk down the beach,” Stewart mused. “I was laughing out loud throughout the entire thing. The collection had a real buoyancy.” She wasn’t the only one who found designer Virginie Viard’s latest work full of whimsy. Clients, press and celebrities including Tilda Swinton, G Dragon and Johnny Depp ex Vanessa Paradis had flown in from all corners of the globe for the event. And there were plenty of locals, too, including Monaco royals such as Charlotte Casiraghi, daughter of Princess Caroline (a BFF of late Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld). The Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic is Like Getting A Warm Hug

May 04, 2022 at 10:06PM At this point, we’re all a little too familiar with TikTok-born micro trends. From coconut girl to balletcore to the goth-aissance, it’s hard to keep up with the never-ending stream of niche fashion subcultures. And now we have yet another to add to our repertoire: coastal grandmother. Coined on TikTok by creator Lex Nicoleta, the coastal grandmother aesthetic describes the laid-back lifestyle of an ever-cozy, well-to-do older woman (think Oprah or Ina Garten). Style-wise, it’s comprised of breezy silhouettes, soft colours and breathable fabrics. But it’s about more than just fashion. The coastal grandmother emits an aura of ease and puts self-care first with weekly rituals like buying fresh flowers and going to the farmer’s market. “If you love Nancy Meyers movies, recipes and cooking, Ina Garten, cozy interiors and more, there’s a good chance you might be a coastal…
