Is Early 2000s Paparazzi Culture Back?

May 16, 2022 at 10:46PM The early 2000s was the golden age of the paparazzi, and the photos captured then (be it Britney Spears wearing a “Dump Him” T-shirt on a coffee run or Kim Kardashian taking a painful sip of vodka at the club) have lived on like sullied souvenirs of decades past. Over the years, we’ve only become more fascinated with the lives of celebrities, but when the internet became available to all, social media usurped the paparazzo. So why does it feel like we’re going backwards? The shock factor of paparazzi pictures seems to be getting attention once again. But this time, it’s thanks to Julia Fox. And unlike her predecessors, she’s in on the joke. Let me paint a picture. In the early aughts, celebrity culture was changing. The internet was becoming a mainstream commodity, tabloid magazines were in…

Celebs Served Up PDA on the BBMAs Red Carpet

May 16, 2022 at 06:50PM Love is in the air…or at least it appeared to be at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards. Instead of using the red carpet to pose in their designer outfits, many celebrities chose to show off their dates. Machine Gun Kelly kneeled down to take photos of his “wife” Megan Fox (he said it, not us!); Travis Scott lovingly wrapped his arms around Kylie Jenner; Michael Buble cradled wife Luisana Lopilato’s baby bump. Call it love, call it a phony photo opportunity — any way you slice it, PDA brings some excitement to what is otherwise a pretty regimented activity. Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly. Blige and…

All the Looks from the Junos Red Carpet

May 16, 2022 at 03:32PM Last night, the 2022 Junos brought together some of Canada’s best music talent. And while the event’s red carpet is typically a more understated affair compared to those happening stateside, you can still expect some stand out fashion moments (like host Simu Liu in awards season’s favourite colour, hot pink). But perhaps the most memorable moment was when pop-punk queen Avril Lavigne performed a nostalgic medley of her early 2000s hits “Complicated,” “Girlfriend,” “I’m With You” and “Sk8r Boi,” as well as “Bite Me” from her newest album Love Sux. For its first in-person show since 2019, the 51st annual Junos was held at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage on Sunday (May 15). Montreal-born Charlotte Cardin was this year’s most decorated artist with four awards: Artist of the Year, Single of the Year for “Meaningless,” Pop Album of the Year…

Tommy Hilfiger and Shawn Mendes Aim for Circularity + More Fashion News

May 14, 2022 at 04:00PM Tommy Hilfiger and Shawn Mendes team up Photography courtesy of Tommy HilfigerWhen Shawn Mendes pulled up to the Met Gala earlier this month in an upcycled Tommy Hilfiger getup, he was likely foreshadowing his multifaceted collaboration with the American brand. This week, Tommy Hilfiger and Shawn Mendes officially revealed their partnership, Play it Forward, as a next step in the brand’s evolution and sustainability journey. To kick off, the Canadian singer-songwriter is fronting the Summer 2022 “Classics Reborn” campaign, a collection made of sustainable material. Mendes will also sport custom sustainable Tommy styles throughout his upcoming world tour while the brand donates USD$1 million to mitigate and offset the environmental impacts of the tour. What’s more, Mendes will dabble in design as the partnership culminates next spring with a co-designed, circular capsule. Jimmy Choo brings glamour to pools…

Taylor, Give Us 1989 Already

May 13, 2022 at 11:01PM The first time I heard 1989 by Taylor Swift, I was still a teenager and my world felt like it was about to change forever. It’s only been eight years since the album’s release and yet it feels like it happened in another lifetime. Back then, in 2014, Spotify wasn’t really on my radar and Apple Music didn’t even exist. Plus, as a major Swifite, I wasn’t about to just buy the album off iTunes — I needed the 19-track deluxe CD (featuring extra songs and voice memos, with Polaroid pictures inside). If I’m honest, I was slightly embarrassed to be such a super fan. I scurried out of class on October 27 that year not telling a soul that I was headed straight to Target (remember when we had those in Canada?) to pick up my copy.…

The Soap Opera-fication of Selling Sunset

May 13, 2022 at 07:41PM I started watching Selling Sunset the year after it had first premiered, when a coworker promised I’d fall in love with “the mean one in the black wedding gown.” She was right, because after only a few episodes, I was enraptured by Christine Quinn’s cinematic presence and the Short Kings (Jason and Brett Oppenheim) running the Oppenheim Group. The reality series follows Quinn and the other real estate agents working at the luxury brokerage. In those early seasons, what it lacked in plot and diversity, it made up for by being incredibly easy to consume. The insane music choices and gratuitous entrance sequences, for example, stunned and horrified me in equal measure. And, according to TikTok, I wasn’t alone. @nicholas_flannery We stan @Christine Quinn in this house #SellingSunset #sellingsunsetseason5 #christinequinn #realtor @netflix ♬ original sound – HRH Nicholas…

Louis Vuitton’s Cruise Woman is the Main Character

May 13, 2022 at 05:37PM Everyone has their rituals when buying new shoes. Some walk around the store. Others might jump up and down on the spot. But my friend and I put prospective purchases through a “run away test.” What is the run away test, you might ask? It’s about checking to see if we can literally run away while wearing a new pair of footwear. Run away from what, exactly? Well, that part we haven’t quite figured out. Maybe it’s from a bad date? Or perhaps it’s from an impromptu alien invasion? Either way, we’re no damsels in distress. And clearly, creative director Nicholas Ghesquière has the same mentality as every shoe in the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2023 show fit this very specific criteria — metallic tennis shoes, buckled black sneakers with bulbous platforms, sequined boots with a thick sensible heel.…

Faouzia is Giving You A Taste of What’s to Come

May 13, 2022 at 05:08PM Faouzia is thinking about the future. After spending years fine-tuning her first album, Citizens, she’s finally ready to release it into the world. But the mononymous Moroccan-Canadian singer is not one to rest on her laurels. In fact, Faouzia is already planning her next record, a sister album of sorts with the same futuristic fantasies. “They are both playing off of each other in my head, but Citizens is like the more subdued sibling,” she tells FASHION. Even still, the album packs a punch. With each song on Citizens (out May 19), Faouzia tells a story. “Minefields” is a heartfelt ballad, while “RIP, Love” is an Arabic trill-filled track about letting go of a partner. But it’s “Puppet,” a bop about breaking free from expectations, that really shows what the artist has up her stylistic sleeve. The song’s music…

How I Reclaimed Indian Beauty Rituals for Myself

May 13, 2022 at 04:28PM As an on-air culture commentator, I often get to watch films and TV shows before they’re released to the public. Admittedly, I’m a little choosy with what I spend my time watching. But when a preview for season two of Netflix’s Bridgerton became available, I cleared my schedule and binged all eight episodes in two days flat. I had seen the trailer and posters and was eager to watch Kate and Edwina Sharma join the regal affair that is the Ton’s courting season. And when the credits rolled on the final episode, I desperately wanted to talk to my South Asian friends — heck, I wanted to talk to the entire world about the Sharma sisters. In all my 43 years, I’d never seen such a display of beautiful, dark-skinned South Asian representation on an American series —…
