Multi-hyphenate Creative Force Dilone is FASHION’s March Cover Star

February 10, 2022 at 02:30PM Destined to be a one-name star, Dilone is a 27-year-old model turned actor who speaks with an expressive energy and openness that mirror the invigorating poses she’s known to strike. Born Janiece Altagracia Dilone, the Dominican American multi-hyphenate who spends most of her time “all over the place” takes our call while visiting family in her hometown of Long Island, N.Y. The bustling sounds in the background deliver an audible snapshot of her childhood in a big family. “It was great,” she says. “I grew up with nine siblings, so you can imagine there were a lot of personalities. But there was a lot of creativity and playfulness in the house, especially when we put on shows. When it was bad, it was 10 times as bad, but when it was good, it was really good. A lot…

Special Message from FASHION’s Editor-in-Chief

February 09, 2022 at 08:30PM You are unapologetic about who you are. And so are we. So FASHION has adopted a new tagline: Unapologetically Ourselves. We feel it reflects where we are now since transforming, two years ago, from a traditional women’s magazine to a brand for all ages, sizes, genders, ethnicities and orientations. Since then we have written about so many fascinating fashion and beauty lovers — from a guy who wears sequins to an 80-year-old woman with pink hair. We have featured people with a range of styles — from elegant to eccentric. And we’ve heard over and over again how emotionally and spiritually connected our subjects are to their fashion and beauty choices. So when our team gathered for an editorial conference a few months ago to discuss future story ideas, we realized that we are living in a new…

Is Adele Engaged?

February 09, 2022 at 06:46PM After the emotionally exhausting and tearfully tumultuous few years Adele has had — as thoroughly documented on her new album 30 — the British singer deserves a win. And not just a few wins, ALL the wins. During last night’s Brit Awards, Adele did just that, taking home the night’s top prizes: Album of the Year, Song of the Year for “Easy on Me,” and Artist of the Year. The singer dedicated her awards to her son Angelo and her ex-husband Simon Konecki. ”I’d like to dedicate this award to my son. And to Simon, to his dad. This album was all of our journey, not just mine, and I’m very proud of myself for sticking to my guns and putting out an album that was about something so personal to me,” she said through tears. “‘Cause not…

Smythe Opens its First Brick-And-Mortar in a Virtual Era

February 09, 2022 at 06:35PM This week, the doors to an alluring shop in Toronto’s Summerhill neighborhood swung wide open, welcoming customers, new and long-standing, to peruse its selection of blazers, jackets and other impeccably-tailored wardrobe staples. Women’s ready-to-wear label Smythe has debuted its very first retail storefront. Co-founded by Andrea Lenczner and Christie Smythe, Smythe has paraded through the women’s clothing market for 18 years, first as a wholesaler and then via e-commerce, and has become known for fashioning some contemporary-loving celebrities (the brand’s list of name drops include Meghan Markle, Madonna and Blake Lively). View this post on Instagram   A post shared by SMYTHE (@smythebrand) Developments for Smythe’s store began in 2019, before headlines of a life-altering pandemic swarmed our screens. Although it may seem “risky” to open up a retail shop as we trudge through the umpteenth COVID wave,…

Accessible Hair and Makeup Hacks (and Why We Need More)

February 09, 2022 at 04:15PM As those with mobility and accessibility needs know, mastering the skill (and sometimes strength) required to get the hair and makeup looks you long for without a few hacks here and there can feel like an unfair struggle. “There are so many people who don’t call themselves disabled or consider that they have accessibility needs, but they might have hand tremors from normal, daily tasks such as typing all the time or simply ageing,” says Bella Strange, a pro makeup artist, who along with expert hairstylist Susan Shipley, is appearing on Fashion Dis, a new show that features head-to-toe makeovers for those seeking adaptive solutions. We asked Strange and Shipley about the many face and the hair and makeup tools and formulas that can potentially make your daily beauty routine a lot more accessible. What are some common…

Balletcore is a Refined Take On Athleisure

February 09, 2022 at 04:05PM At a time when life feel less like the Nutcracker and more like Swan Lake, channeling the off-duty ballerina can feel like an elegant escape. Enter balletcore. For months, balletcore has been gaining traction on TikTok, the undeniable breeding ground for aesthetic subgenres. Comprised of leotards, wraps sweaters, turtle necks, shrugs, flared leggings, wrap tie skirts, ballet flats and tightly fitting coats, the feminine aesthetic might conjure an image of a ballerina draped in pearls, perfume and light pink hues en route to rehearsal. Balletcore is largely inspired by the 2010 dark thriller Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman as Nina Sayers opposite Mila Kunas as Lily. (A CliffsNotes guide: In a production of Swan Lake, Nina is overcome by the pressure of her competition with Lily and descends into madness.) But the relationship between the fashion industry and…

Kirsten Dunst Deserves This Oscar

February 08, 2022 at 09:51PM Kirsten Dunst is one of the most captivating performers of our generation (I mean, she went from The Virgin Suicides to Bring It On in the span of a year!), but even as the child actor turned teen screen queen was laureled among her peers, she could never nab the industry accolades she deserved. Well, today, the Academy actually did something right. Dunst’s first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog is long overdue. Set in 1925 Montana, the dark western tells the story of a malicious rancher named Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose brother marries a single mother Rose Gordon (Dunst). Photography Courtesy of NetflixAfter she moves into the Burbank family home with her son, Phil intimidates and incessantly taunts Rose — sending her spiraling. The eerie film follows her devastating descent…

Maddy is the It Girl With Edge in Euphoria

February 07, 2022 at 09:36PM Unlike most high school students,  Maddy Perez isn’t on a mission to find herself. She knows who she is and is simply waiting for everyone else to catch up. As the bonafide It Girl on HBO’s Euphoria, her style is the most recognizable and easy to recreate. Channeling the ’90s and early aughts, Maddy’s wardrobe is comprised of shoulder bags, mini skirts, crop tops, bodycon dresses and Clueless-style matching sets. Confident and combative, Maddy serves endless style inspiration and quotable one-liners. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF EDDY CHEN/HBOPlayed by the equally fashionable Alexa Demie (who helped curate the character’s aesthetic with costume designer Heidi Bivens), Maddy and her style has had an influence in the world outside of Euphoria. (Who can forget the I.Am.Gia set she wore in season one, which went on to become one of 2019’s most coveted…
