How to Wear Spring’s Jewellery Trends, According to Mara Paris

March 11, 2022 at 06:08PM To paraphrase Marilyn Monroe, jewellery has always been a girl’s (or really anyone’s!) best friend. Made more apparent by the pandemic, an eclectic pair of earrings or cluster of gold chains can instantly elevate an outfit, and many have rediscovered the power of a well-placed upper body accessory thanks to two years of Zoom meetings. But what separates a good piece of jewellery from a great piece of jewellery? Designer Ayça Özbank Taşkan of Mara Paris says it’s in the process and the details. “Making pieces that look effortlessly simple is hard,” she shares over video chat. “It’s really all about the small details.” And that’s been the secret to her and her brand’s success. Photography courtesy of Mara ParisNo stranger to a design challenge, Özbank Taşkan started her creative career as an architect. Looking for a different…

Raveena Wants to Teach You About the Power of Meditation

March 09, 2022 at 04:33PM I can’t help but smile at Raveena Aurora’s response when I ask her what piece of clothing she holds close to her heart. There’s an endearing quality behind her resolve to give me a sincere answer, and her thought process demonstrates how the delicate nature of her artistry extends to her everyday demeanor. In a world that often measures time with metrics of productivity, the artist welcomes you to slow down. During our Zoom call, the Indian-American musician, currently located in Los Angeles, takes a moment to rummage through her colourful clothing collection. I hear the sound of hangers lightly clanging as she combs through her closet, finally reaching the floral pink dress she wore in the music video for her 2019 song “Mama,” a blissful ode to her mother and grandmother. Like any great sundress, “it carries…

Jasmine Fares on Creating Modest Basics

March 09, 2022 at 04:07PM Influencers are arguably some of the most compelling (and perhaps polarizing) public figures of the digital age. They review the trendiest products, share endless outfit inspo, and above all, deliver enough cross-platform content to keep us glued to our screens. Canadian-Muslim influencer Jasmine Fares has this recipe down to a science. From managing a shared TikTok account with her husband — which boasts a whopping 778,400 followers — to running her own modest fashion brand, FARES, the 26-year-old content creator is one to watch. Fares got her start on social media at a time when few Muslim influencers were represented in the sea of style and beauty of gurus attracting audiences online. She began on Instagram but quickly made her way across multiple platforms, posting regular content on YouTube and, now, TikTok. As an entrepreneur, Fares saw a…

The Best Beauty Looks from Paris Fashion Week

March 08, 2022 at 04:38PM In a surprise twist, the beauty trends out of Paris Fashion Week were arguably the month’s most pared down of all. Instead of delivering over the top glam, the city of lights’ message for fall entailed various levels of chic undress when it came to hair and makeup. Bare faces were taken a step further with seemingly not a speck of eye makeup (save for a strong brow) at shows such as Loewe, Elie Saab, Chloé and Balmain. The look was paired with the part of the moment (flat down the middle) at several shows, including Courrèges, Louis Vuitton and Acne Studios. If depending so heavily on a fine-toothed comb doesn’t appeal, the wet looks we saw in Milan continued at Sacai and Valentino, ensuring nary a blowdry is necessary. Ann Demeulemeester, Elie Saab, and Isabel Marant even…

On Being A Cry Baby

March 08, 2022 at 04:25PM As a young child, I was quick to tears. My emotions were not tended to by my parents and, at some point, I stopped tending to them as well. To my mother, a child of Ukrainian immigrants, and my dad, an immigrant from Macedonia, life was much more pragmatic. I was taught how to behave, not necessarily how to feel. But I felt everything. I’d cry uncontrollably when faced with most things I found too daunting: swimming lessons, gymnastics, the first day of school. With no one to hold space for my big emotions, I became numb to them and followed a life path that was more passively found than actively chosen: go to university, get a job, find a man to marry, have children. I was socialized to be a nurturer in a society that was suspect…

What is Fashion’s Role in a Global Crisis?

March 07, 2022 at 10:03PM As models trudged through a harsh, man-made snowstorm at Balenciaga’s Paris Fashion Week presentation on March 6, the show’s message became glaringly obvious: if art imitates life, the world is in a dire state. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, midway through fashion month, designers have grappled with their role. In an industry that is often viewed as frivolous, it’s difficult to celebrate the art and creativity of clothing with war raging on, not only in Ukraine but in other parts of the world like Palestine, Yemen, South Sudan and Syria. Tensions behind the Russia-Ukraine conflict had been building for years, with Russian nationalists led by president Vladimir Putin insisting that Ukraine was manipulated into seeking independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and that the Eastern European country shouldn’t exist as a sovereign nation.…

Gwen Stefani Has a New Makeup Line + More Beauty News

March 05, 2022 at 02:30PM Gxve by Gwen Stefani makeup line drops at Sephora Photography Courtesy of SephoraIt was only a matter of time before Gwen Stefani released her own makeup range inspired by her famous red lips and killer brows. Gxve by Gwen Stefani (pronounced “give”) is indeed inspired by her love of the classics but has been formulated with high-performance colour payoff in mind. The range is highly edited with only a few red lip colours, four eyeshadow palettes (all in neutral shades), two brow pencil formulas, a black eyeliner pencil (dubbed “Spiderwebs,” of course) and a universal priming face oil, but we can only guess there’s more exciting drops to come. The whole line has earned Sephora’s certified clean label and based on the fact that it just about instantly sold out, we’d say so far it seems hella good. This…
