Curve-Washing is the Illusion of Body Inclusivity

June 08, 2022 at 02:53PM Are we really in the age of size inclusivity? As more curvy models appear on catwalks, magazine covers and brand campaigns, it would seem the answer to that question is “yes.” But when we see the marketing tactics at play behind such progress, it becomes performative at best, and fatphobic at worst. The sad truth is, the promise to cater to all shapes and sizes is merely a ploy for many brands. And it’s been given a name: curve-washing. The retail strategy is pervasive but sometimes hard to spot. Curve-washing is when brands use body-positive language, marketing and imagery to appear inclusive when they are, in fact, not. We often see this when brands use size-diverse models in ad campaigns or on runways without actually selling those same sizes. “I’m seeing [curve-washing] everywhere,” TikTok creator @hannahleelifestyle said in…

June 07, 2022 at 04:00PM Drag Superstar Symone can’t stop smiling. She’s smiling when we talk about her winning season 13 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She’s smiling when we discuss drag as a form of activism. She’s even smiling when she experiences tech troubles. And it’s not just any smile; it’s a rare smile that feels completely genuine. It’s radiant, infectious and just a little goofy, and it takes up her entire face. And with the world at her bedazzled fingertips, Symone truly does have a lot to smile about. During her time on Drag Race, the self-proclaimed “Ebony Enchantress” quickly became a favourite among fans and judges for her bubbly personality, quirky laugh and avant-garde style. The Depp v Heard Verdict Isn’t Really A Victory For Abuse Survivors

June 06, 2022 at 09:07PM The defamation lawsuit between ex-spouses Johnny Depp and Amber Heard came to an end on June 1, but the fallout from this case has just begun. The jury found both parties to be guilty of defamation, and awarded Depp $15 million in damages and Heard $2 million. It was a victory for Johnny Depp, but some argue the verdict was a loss for abuse survivors everywhere. To recap: The jury found Heard defamed Depp in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post, in which she did not actually name her ex-husband. The statements Depp claimed to be defamatory and false were: “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change”; “Two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath…

Here, the multihyphenate shares his playlist for Pride and his other top tips to get the most out of the month. What’s been your most memorable Pride experience? In 2019, I was DJing at Electric Island during Pride and I had one of those realizations where I was like, ‘Wow, I’m an artist.’ I could also just feel the love in the crowd. I don’t really have a specific outfit, but I love to gender bend and wear clothes that make me feel powerful and elegant.…

Sydney Sweeney’s Micro-mini + More MTV Movie & TV Awards Looks

June 06, 2022 at 04:59PM The MTV Movie & TV Awards has been creating viral moments before social media was even really a thing. Take the 2005 show, when Best Kiss winners Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams recreated their dramatic smooch from The Notebook on stage as Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved” played over cheers (including those from celebrities like Hillary Duff and Lindsay Lohan). Is there anything more quintessentially early 2000s than that? And last night, MTV tapped into our collective nostalgia for that very era. Between appearances by J. Lo and Snoop Dog, Vanessa Hudgens as host and noughties fashion (Sydney Sweeney’s Miu Miu micro-mini; Olivia Rodrigo’s spiky updo), the MTV Movie & TV Awards red carpet took us on a trip back through time. See for yourself in the gallery below, where we’ve rounded up all the best red…

When speaking about Indigenous representation in the clean beauty space, Laura Whitaker, the Toronto-based founder of the brand, says: “Clean and green beauty is not an inclusive space, generally. While the beauty industry is finally making room for Indigenous models, influencers, and entrepreneurs, there’s still a long way to go.
