Goth is Going Mainstream

April 29, 2022 at 07:28PM Oddly enough, the two most formative films of my youth were Interview With the Vampire and Bring It On. In the shadows of my teenage bedroom, I gorged on ghost stories, but in the daylight, my cheerleading uniform and study-time sweats cloaked my macabre interests. While I secretly lusted over mesh tops, Tripp NYC pants and lace chokers in my dark sanctuary, I was always too afraid to put down my pom-poms. Not because I didn’t care about clothes (far from it) but because I thought the styles I loved were off limits to Black girls — especially the ones who led school pep rallies. In the mid-to-late-2000s, goth was largely considered a “white” thing. While I’m sure there were kids of colour lurking around with eyebrow piercings and velvet corsets, I never saw them in the light…

Five Trends We Expect to See at the Met Gala

April 28, 2022 at 09:09PM We’re less than a week out from the first Monday of May, which makes for much anticipation, guest-list speculation and outfit predictions for the 2022 Met Gala. This year, the theme is “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” with a white tie dress code that specifies “gilded glamour.” Stretching from 1870s to the 1900s, the Gilded Age was a period of rapid economic growth and income inequality, with society’s upper echelon donning extravagant and fanciful dress as a means of demonstrating wealth. “The 2022 Met Gala will ask its attendees to embody the grandeur — and perhaps the dichotomy — of Gilded Age New York,” Vogue stated in an article explaining the theme. As happens every year, we expect some to misinterpret the theme (this isn’t a Bridgerton party), and others to use the red carpet to make…

It’s Official — Trompe L’Oeil is Back

April 28, 2022 at 04:24PM Trompe L’Oeil, an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that objects exist in three dimensions, has been around since the early 19th century. But the surrealist approach was first popularized in fashion by the designer Elsa Schiaparelli in 1927 on a knitted sweater, and it has since become a signature technique of the house. From then on, many designers have dabbled with the detail, last seen on the runways of Moschino, Loewe and Bottega Veneta for their Fall/Winter 2022 collections, while Coach and Marni incorporated the whimsical element in their Spring/Summer 2022 collections. As we head into fashion’s playful, dopamine direction, we expect to see elements like this become more prevalent in the next few seasons. Ready to add some cheeky details to your wardrobe? Here are a few pieces available on the…

The New Barbie Film Teases A Hot-Pink Universe

April 27, 2022 at 09:53PM Barbie and her perma-pink world are officially coming to life. On April 26, Warner Bros. nearly broke the internet after sharing a first-look at its upcoming romantic comedy about the world-famous doll. A live-action Barbie (played by Margot Robbie) is seen giggling in a Chevrolet Corvette, wearing a blue and white ensemble that juxtaposes the pink permeating the rest of the image. Set to release in July 2023, the doll’s live film adaptation is the first of its kind. Directed by Greta Gerwig and featuring cast members Ryan Gosling as Ken, Tick, Tick…Boom! star Alexandra Shipp, Canadian actor Simu Liu and Sex Education’s Emma Mackey, the cinematic exploration into Barbie’s legacy is already highly anticipated. Since launching in 1959, Barbie has had deep ties in the fashion industry. Not only was it the first doll to win a…

Lizzo is a Taurus Style Icon

April 27, 2022 at 09:04PM Hear me out, Lizzo is the definition of a Taurus. She’s down-to-earth, dependable and all about self care. The self-proclaimed Bop Star is a Taurus Sun, Virgo Moon — just like me, and I can attest to the downsides of being a double earth sign. When you mix the meticulous nature of the bull with perfectionist Virgo, you can easily veer into workaholic territory. Enter: creature comforts. Taureans know when to treat themselves, and in my case, it’s usually with a face mask and some sort of indulgent drink. In Lizzo’s case…Well, as they say on TikTok, we’re in a different tax bracket — but let’s be honest, she’s earned it. Between her award-winning records and influence on the world of inclusive fashion, Lizzo’s impact can’t be understated. And so, in honour of her 34th birthday, we’re taking…

This Canadian Collector Has Amassed 250 Pairs Of Designer Heels

April 27, 2022 at 06:07PM Shirley Ibe has not followed her father’s advice. “His mindset was always quality over quantity,” the makeup artist shares of her dad’s shopping mantra. But with around 250 pairs of designer heels (recently reduced from 400 after a closet cleanout), she says she’s chosen both. “I’ve definitely gone to the extreme in terms of quantity,” she laughs. Growing up in Canada, Libya and Malaysia, Ibe always loved beautiful things. The collector credits her parents with cultivating her passions, whether they took the form of cosmetics or clothing. “I grew up in a household where appearance was important,” she reveals. “My mom was one of those women who always looked put together, and I never, ever saw my dad in jeans.” PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAY CHROHMWhile Ibe’s initial infatuation with designer high heels came from her family, it wasn’t until…

Crop Tops are the Hottest Bridal Trend for Spring 2023

April 26, 2022 at 08:06PM Midriff-baring brides are going to be all over your social media feed next spring. For Bridal Fashion Week Spring 2023, designers brought back square necklines, floral appliquĂ©s, puff sleeves and more trends from the eighties and nineties. Most interesting, though, was the many low-slung skirts and crop tops on the catwalk. It would seem that no category of fashion is safe from our early 2000s obsession, even wedding gowns, as designers like Marco Maria, Rivini by Rita Vinieris, Isabel Sanchis and Enzo Miccio sent two-piece bridal outfits down the runway. But if there was ever a time to try something new for your special day, it would be now. After a few years of canceled and postponed nuptials, celebrations are in order, and a crop top might be the most appropriate outfit to take you from the aisle…

Two Sikh Canadians on How Their Hair Connects Them With Their Identity

April 22, 2022 at 07:13PM For a Sikh, hair is considered sacred and one of five physical religious symbols. Others include a stainless steel bracelet called a kara, which represents infinite love and equality, and a kanga, a comb that is carried to represent good hygiene. Once baptized — in a ceremony known as Amrit Sanskar, which can take place at whatever age one feels ready to fully commit to one’s faith — Sikhs believe in letting their hair grow out of respect for God. While hair is certainly associated with a sense of pride for a Sikh, it’s also believed that keeping it uncut and uncoloured is part of leading a humble life. To protect their ever-growing strands, men often choose to wear turbans. Women are welcome to wear them as well, but it’s much less common. Here, two Canadians shed light…
