Who is Eileen Gu, China’s Viral Met Gala Star?

May 04, 2022 at 07:56PM Leave it to the Met Gala to bring together all the Kardashian-Jenner ladies, cast members from Bridgerton and Euphoria, and some of music’s biggest names (Lizzo topped all of our best dressed lists, if we’re honest). A guest list this glamorous is no accident. Anna Wintour’s pride and joy (outside the pages of American Vogue) is all about creating viral moments. And while there was plenty of fabulous fodder on the steps of the Met, it was one guest in particular that set social media ablaze (and no, it wasn’t Kim Kardashian and her grand entrance in Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy birthday, Mr. President” gown). American-born Olympian Eileen Gu went viral on China’s mega-popular microblogging site Weibo after walking the Met Gala red carpet. In her second appearance at the fundraising gala, the Olympic gold medalist freestyle skier and…

How Princess Diana Created a Formula for Younger Royals to Follow

May 04, 2022 at 07:54PM Princess Diana is arguably more popular than ever. Spencer, the biopic starring Kristen Stewart, was one of the buzziest films of the year. Emma Corrin skyrocketed to fame after portraying the young royal in the most recent season of The Crown. And an on-set photo of Elizabeth Debicki (the actress replacing Corrin for the show’s final season) wearing a replica of the iconic “revenge dress” went viral almost instantly. So what’s the reason behind this eternal fascination with the life and fashion of Princess Diana? “She had everything people dream of in a princess,”says royal photographer Samir Hussein.“She was beautiful, she had style, she developed her own voice and influence, but still had frailties. And I think that bucked the trend of how a royal should behave.” Now, a quarter century after her death, a castle in Toronto…

Bleached Brows Were *the* Look at the 2022 Met Gala

May 04, 2022 at 03:13PM It might be fashion’s biggest night of the year, but that doesn’t mean beauty takes a backseat on the Met Gala red carpet. And Monday night’s “gilded glamour” theme saw many celebs up the fashion ante even further with their chosen beauty looks. The 2022 Met Gala brought together the biggest names in the entertainment, fashion and beauty industries, and A-list attendees wore their most avant-garde ensembles, resulting in red carpet buzz surrounding the parade of experimental garments. But this year proved that hair, makeup and nails are part of the overall package. After all, it was during the Gilded Age that cosmetics became more accessible thanks to the industrial revolution. And while the era’s penchant for soft hues translated to rosy cheeks on the 2022 Met Gala red carpet, many celebrities took a more modern approach to…

Roe v. Wade Overshadows Gilded Glamour of the Met Gala

May 03, 2022 at 10:45PM Poor Anna Wintour. Not even her Chanel sunglasses could hide her from this mess. After months of painstakingly perfecting the guest list and seating chart, marrying the right designer with the right star, curating on-theme place settings, floral arrangements and decor, and overseeing the actual exhibition, in the end, it didn’t matter. None of it did. All anyone will remember about last night’s Met Gala was the news that the Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that legalized abortion nationwide in America. View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Costume Institute (@metcostumeinstitute) If the news wasn’t so profoundly disturbing, the irony would be funny. And in a really dark sense of the word, it is. The theme of this year’s two-part exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was American…

Goth-aissance, Gender-bending and Other Trends That Ruled the Met Gala

May 03, 2022 at 10:14PM We’ve come to expect the unexpected at the Met Gala and this year was no different. The highly anticipated “gilded glamour” dress code was met with edgy, modern and ostentatious interpretations (think Ben Platt in a corset, Cardi B quite literally covered in gold and Kim Kardashian doing her best Marilyn Monroe impression) but the most shocking trend of the night? All-black ensembles. Indeed, in 2022, it appears gilded glamour is goth. Both the exhibit and the dress code were an ode to the late 19th century and the aesthetics of this era immediately evoke images of gold-painted opulence, colourful layers and gaudy saturated embroideries. But instead of looking like an extra from HBO’s new show aptly titled The Gilded Age, many stars chose to subvert expectations by gracing the steps of the Met in monochromatic dark frocks.…

This Canadian Designer On Why It’s A Weird Time To Be Alive

May 02, 2022 at 07:50PM Cassie Germann’s brand, It’s A Weird Time To Be Alive, started as a kind of art therapy. “I called them ‘pandemic panic drawings,‘” says the former tattoo artist of her initial graphics. “In 2020, everything was so overwhelming that I would just sit and draw while listening to the news. Suddenly, I had all of this artwork that I thought would look great on a t-shirt, but the problem was, during the lockdown, nothing was open, so I was forced to work with what I had.” Enter daily trips to the dollar store for fabric paint and upcycling pieces from her own closet, and the Canadian sustainable brand was born. For Germann, It’s A Weird Time To Be Alive is a form of fashionable activism, hence the quirky yet powerful collages she creates on upcycled clothing. As a…

There Are No Rules in Amaal’s Futuristic Universe

May 02, 2022 at 04:33PM Amaal has been dreaming up a world of her own for some time now. For most of her life, the Somali-Canadian singer was constrained by rigid expectations of womanhood as a result of her conservative upbringing. She grew up in Toronto as the fourth of 10 siblings, after her family fled the civil war in Somalia in the 1990s. For years, Amaal felt the limitations of simply existing with a multitude of identities. But now, she’s created a vibrant universe that celebrates them in her sophomore EP Milly. The R&B artist spent many sleepless nights building vision boards on Pinterest to create her utopic universe. “I asked myself, ‘What would a world look like where people didn’t have to conform to the identities given to them?’” she recalls. Influenced by ‘90s and early 2000s futurism, Milly’s stylistic world is…
