Luckily, the new Mejuri home decor collection has a stylish solution. Partnering with Claude Home, the Canadian brand is releasing two vessels/jewellery boxes reminiscent of a Zen Garden. Too beautiful to hide in a bathroom, we recommend keeping these on display where everyone can see them. Canada Goose partners with Briony Douglas on an upcycled art installation Photography by Elaine FancyIf you find yourself in Toronto this month and are looking for something to do, we recommend Briony Douglas’s ‘Reborn: a HUMANATURE art installation’ at the Harbourfront Centre. The Making of Chanel No. 5

May 20, 2022 at 02:35PM Spritz a fine mist of Chanel No. 5 and you won’t be reminded of a flower. Launched in 1921, the fragrance famously doesn’t evoke one. Rather, one might say it smells like abstract art — a composition beyond nature, a rebellion against the demure (and, frankly, dull) lily of the valley-centric zeitgeist of its time. Instead, it produces an intense hit of powdery, soapy cleanness, which is the result of a lavish dose of aldehydes. To borrow Coco Chanel’s blunt brief to her genius perfumer, Ernest Beaux: It smells like the scent of a woman and nothing else. However, it’s not a contradiction to say that the fragrance couldn’t be what it is without flowers — most crucially its signature jasmine, and not from just anywhere. As for how Chanel No. 5 is made, the parfum, exactly as…

Christine Quinn is Just Playing the Villain

May 19, 2022 at 09:44PM Christine Quinn would like to clear the air, and who can blame her? Not since Spencer Pratt of The Hills has reality television conjured such a polarizing presence. So, earlier this week, in her self-proclaimed “Matrix meets Balenciaga meets hooker” outfit, real estate’s favourite ice queen sat down with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast to tell us all how the reality sausage is really made. The most important ingredient? A villain. Season five of Netflix’s Selling Sunset (which follows the agents working for the Oppenheim Group, a luxury brokerage in Los Angeles) had mixed reviews. The storylines were clearly contrived, hard to follow and at the center of it all was Christine Quinn. So after an unexciting season and awkward reunion (which she did not attend), Quinn would like us all to know that she’s…

Seventies-inspired Fashion Will Be Everywhere This Summer

May 19, 2022 at 06:01PM Seventies-era fashion is having a moment. Brands such as Gucci, Paco Rabanne and Vivetta are drawing inspiration from the decade’s signature styles, including wide-leg pants, cartoon daisy prints and dramatic swirls. The ’70s were a time of experimentation in fashion, and we’re seeing that same sense of adventure re-emerge for this summer. According to Afterpay, serotonin dressing is on the rise, meaning people are pursuing items that bring them joy, including statement-making colours and unconventional prints. Modern takes on ’70s fashion are showing up not only on the runways but also in films and on social media. Clips from the ’70s-set film American Hustle (2013) are circulating on TikTok, while the release of Elvis as well as the rise of modern-day rock stars such as Jake Wesley Rogers remind us of the height of rock n’ roll. And…

The Cult of Fandom Has Taken Over the Depp v Heard Trial

May 19, 2022 at 04:39PM I don’t know Johnny Depp. I mean, I know that he is an actor, but I don’t know him as a person. So why, since being completely consumed by the trial between him and his estranged ex-wife Amber Heard, does it feel like I do? The court case, part of a longstanding legal battle between the ex-spouses, has morphed into a cesspit of internet chaos. And it’s been hard to keep track of what’s real anymore, especially as the obsessive fandom surrounding this lawsuit has grown a life of its own. In short, Johnny Depp is suing Amber Heard for defamation over an essay she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, where she discussed being a victim of abuse, without mentioning Depp’s name. Prior to this, Heard received a restraining order against Depp after accusing him of…

Time is a Construct at Gucci’s Cosmogonie Show

May 17, 2022 at 09:03PM Does time mean anything anymore in fashion? If trend cycles repeat every 20 years (take Y2K’s resurgence as one example), can anything ever be considered new? These are the questions that creative director Alessandro Michele posed at the Gucci Cruise 2023 show, Cosmogonie. Michele chose a 13th-century castle in Puglia, Italy to debut an eveningwear collection that finds the past and present existing in tandem. High-profile guests like Lana Del Rey, Jodie Turner-Smith and Elle Fanning gathered to view the celestial-centric presentation, which featured historical references, astronomy visuals and themes of interconnection. In his show notes, Michele credits German philosopher Walter Benjamin as his inspiration. He cites Benjamin’s “constellation thinking,” which suggests that everything — past and present — can exist at once. In blurring these dichotomies, new, previously unknown constellations are created that “break the constraints of…

Meet the Canadian Designer Who Dressed Kim Kardashian West

May 17, 2022 at 04:43PM Toronto talent Kathryn Bowen talks to FASHION about designing three dresses for Kim Kardashian West in only two weeks, plus her take on slow fashion, dream collaborations and the environmental impact of social media micro trends. Coming from five generations of seamstresses, did you always know you wanted to be in fashion? No, actually. My mom was a very practical woman, so my sister and I were never exposed to the exciting side of fashion. It wasn’t until we started secretly collecting magazines and watching television that everything changed. I was amazed by fashion, and it eventually became my creative outlet. What was the best lesson you learned from UK-based designer Yang Li? Working with Yang Li in London had a huge impact on me as a designer because I was so involved in his process. I essentially…

I Tried Dermaplaning For the First Time: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

May 17, 2022 at 02:00PM Growing up, skin was everything. I remember hearing my mom lament over the fact that she wasn’t raised to take care of her skin. Instead of sunscreen, she’d lather herself up in baby oil and lay out in the sun to roast. She was determined to pass on the habit of daily skincare to me. I was lucky that I never had any serious skin concerns. But as I grew up and after spending a year in the skincare metropolis of South Korea, my interest in the industry developed. When it comes to treatments, there aren’t many I won’t try at least once. I’ll peel, exfoliate, serum and sheet mask my way as close as I can to that perfect, youthful, lit-from-within glowing skin that everyone is talking about and only celebrities seem to attain. Lucky for us…
