Sci-fi Sneakers are the Future of Footwear

May 27, 2022 at 06:39PM There’s a scene in the original Jumanji movie where a young Alan Parrish (Robin Williams) visits his dad’s factory, The Parrish Shoe Company. One of the workers, Carl, pulls him aside to reveal his latest creation: what appears to be a replica of the Air Max 2 Nike Charles Barkelys. “This is the future,” he says. “If I can get Wilt Chamberlain to wear them, I predict there will be a pair of these in every closet in America.” Alan then mistakenly destroys the shoes, a rather large piece of equipment, and Carl’s career. That was 1995. In the years leading up to that moment, some of today’s most sought-after sneakers were hitting the shelves (and closets) of America and beyond. (The Nike Air Jordan 1 OG Breds, released in 1985, are valued at some US$94,000 today —…

This Canadian Designer On Vietnam’s Bold Style

May 27, 2022 at 03:06PM Marisa P. Clark created her brand, Faun Studio, as a way to not only connect with her mother’s home country of Vietnam but to create a more environmentally-friendly and ethical fashion industry. And over the years, the Calgary-based designer has done just that. Clark has played around with different facets of sustainability, from using deadstock fabric to experimenting with recycled materials to taking a course in natural dyes in Mexico this past January. “I’m really looking forward to trying to figure out a way to produce some textiles more sustainably, using local wool and natural plants to dye them,” she tells FASHION over a video chat. Photography courtesy of Faun StudioClark credits her family’s connection with Vietnam for her drive to design sustainable clothing. “When I was starting my company I was really considering how I could contribute to the…

Texture Talk: Viola Davis’s Best Curly Hair Moments

May 26, 2022 at 09:56PM Flashback to the 2012 Oscars red carpet: Viola Davis, who was up for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Aibileen Clark in 2011’s The Help, stunned in a flowing long emerald-green Vera Wang gown and matching oversized earrings. But her vibrant ensemble was far from the main attention-grabber that night. After years of donning an array of wigs on red carpets, the veteran actress had decided to ditch her hairpieces for the prestigious ceremony and unveil her natural hair for the very first time. For Davis, embracing her afro that evening was more than just a style choice. The decision was freeing and became a teachable moment that gave a huge audience a crash course on the ever-complicated politics of Black beauty in the face of Eurocentric standards. Johnny Depp and Kate Moss Are Not Couple Goals, Actually

May 26, 2022 at 03:16PM With each new day, spectators of the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard grow more voracious. And yesterday, the courtroom served up Kate Moss on a silver platter. After being mentioned by Heard in a deposition, the British supermodel appeared in the Fairfax County Circuit Court via video chat to testify about the romantic relationship she had with Depp from the years of 1994 to 1998. When discussing an alleged fight she had with Depp in 2015, Heard referenced a rumour that Johnny Depp had pushed Kate Moss down the stairs at one point during their relationship. But when she took the stand on May 25, Moss stated the rumour was false. “He never pushed me, kicked me, or threw me down any stairs,” she explained. Instead, she said she slipped down the stairs after the…

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker Camp-ified Catholicism

May 24, 2022 at 10:48PM We’ve all seen the pictures by now. This past weekend, Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker had their third (and presumably final) wedding on the coast of Portofino, Italy. The multi-day affair brought plenty of opulence to the Italian Riviera with a generous helping of Catholic cosplay. Setting a new bar for sponsored celebrity nuptuals, the Kravis festivities were “hosted” by luxury brand Dolce & Gabbana. All in all, it was one big ad campaign: the outfits were Dolce & Gabbana (including those worn by the other KarJenner family members), there was a D&G pop-up shop for guests to browse and the wedding ceremony was held at a villa owned by the Italian label. At the centre of this monetized matrimony? What will likely go down as the Kardashian camp-ification of the Catholic church. Photography by NINO/GC ImagesLet’s start with…

Balenciaga Brings its Spring 2023 Collection to Wall Street

May 24, 2022 at 10:21PM Demna is here to give a performance on the fetishization of finance, not a lesson on the pitfalls of capitalism. It’s why the creative director decided to show Balenciaga’s Spring 2023 collection on the trading floor at the New York Stock Exchange this past Sunday. “Clothing is an object of fetish,” he said, according to Business of Fashion. “This is why I do it. There was a link between fetish and also money being the biggest fetish in the world.” His choice of such a volatile setting is nothing if not on brand. Demna’s penchant for dystopian daydreams could also be seen at Paris Fashion Week, where the designer built a simulated blizzard (first as a commentary on climate change before becoming about the war in Ukraine). With stock tickers serving as the backdrop, models obscured by full-body…

How to Dress Like the New Anne Hathaway

May 24, 2022 at 08:58PM Anne Hathaway, a budding fashion icon? No one would’ve believed you if you had said those words five years ago. Supremely talented? Hello, she won an Oscar! Charming and likeable? You can’t convince me her and Mia Thermopolis from The Princess Diaries aren’t the same person. But a risk-taking style superstar? Not so much. Photo by Gisela Schober/Getty ImagesBoy, did she prove us all wrong at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. With the help of her stylist Erin Walsh, she turned heads and dropped jaws in not one but five gorgeous looks, each more iconic than the next. Her first, and probably her best, was a custom Armani Privé white column skirt with a bandeau crop top and Bvlgari necklace. Next, she embodied a retro Gucci girl in a textured mini blue number and some killer shades. After…

Jonathan Van Ness on the Power of Hair

May 23, 2022 at 04:00PM It’s safe to assume that Jonathan Van Ness is your favourite member of the Fab Five. While the whole cast of Queer Eye is undeniably lovable, the breakout success of Van Ness, the show’s resident hair and grooming expert, is easy to understand. His positive attitude and his ability to put anyone at ease with his unapologetically steadfast commitment to being himself are magnetic. It even recently landed him his own Netflix series, Getting Curious With Jonathan Van Ness. It’s the same charmingly optimistic approach he was inspired to bring to the masses with JVN, his recently launched line of hair products. “Our hair is a versatile, powerful accessory, and it has an incredible ability to improve our confidence,” says Van Ness, who has worked with the gamut of clients on Queer Eye, including those who had given…
