A Look Back at Thierry Mugler’s Best Creations

January 24, 2022 at 07:36PM Manfred Thierry Mugler never really played it safe. The French designer, who died January 23 at age 73, opened his eponymous Paris boutique in 1978. At that time, he had already worked for several designers and created his own collection, CafĂ© de Paris. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Mugler’s popularity grew as his penchant for sultry futurism, hyper-feminine glamour (think broad shoulders and cinched waists with a distinctly sci-fi feel) and theatrics that bordered on drag rewrote the traditional catwalk. His space age era would later give way to otherworldly creations that were inspired by aquatica and vampirism, and would be worn by a diverse cast of models that included porn stars, drag queens and fashion It Girls of the era like Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista. As his stature grew, Mugler’s designs were worn by celebrities like…

17 Sweatpants to Lounge Around in for International Sweatpants Day

January 21, 2022 at 05:37PM What better way to celebrate International Sweatpants Day (yes, it’s real) than by relaxing in your comfiest loungewear all day long? Granted, many of us hoped our cozy pandemic wear was a thing of the past, but that dream was squashed when Omicron sent us all back into one form of isolation or another. Besides, as we enter 2022, it’s clear that our desire for comfort has not yet subsided. With more companies adopting work-from-home or hybrid schedules for their employees, we foresee sweatshirts and sweatpants continuing to be a wardrobe staple in many peoples’ lives. Even designers are making athleisure an essential part of their product offerings (take Prada’s collaboration with Adidas for instance). Whether you’re running errands, attending zoom meetings all day or binge-watching the latest season of a popular TV show (Euphoria, anyone?), sweatpants are…

Bridgerton Season Two is Still Blue-Dress Obsessed

January 20, 2022 at 06:23PM Full disclosure: I love blue. While it might be known as the basic you-know-what of the colour wheel, I can’t help myself. It’s an addiction! My house is blue; my coat is blue; my nails are blue; the list is relatively endless. But even for a blue-fangled fanatic like myself, I have to ask: Bridgerton season two, what’s with the obsession? If you watched the first season of the Netflix phenomenon, you’ll know instantly what I’m talking about. Whether it was for a casual romp in the garden or a full-blown ball, heroine Daphne was scarcely seen on screen without a minty frock, and the pastel was christened as ‘Bridgerton Blue’ by fans and media outlets alike. Are We in the Age of Acne Acceptance?

January 20, 2022 at 03:47PM Nothing lives in my head rent free quite like a Proactiv infomercial. In the early 2000s, the brand’s ads would play during American Idol commercial breaks, and despite being a kid with no first-hand knowledge of acne (yet), I was convinced Proactiv was the It Brand for any and all skin woes. For years, Proactiv’s celebrity-fronted advertisements featured success stories where people shared testimonials about the shame they felt before the company’s products “fixed” their skin. This approach earned the brand criticism, and it was most notably slammed in 2019 when Kendall Jenner signed on as its newest face, with many accusing the campaign of lacking authenticity. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kendall (@kendalljenner) Across all its ads, though, Proactiv’s messaging was clear: good skin is skin without any blemishes, texture or scarring. But…

We Have Questions About the New Squid Game Clothing Collab

January 19, 2022 at 10:07PM There’s a distinctive joy in reliving the excitement of a piece of media — be it a film, series or video game — in the clothing you wear. Netflix gets this, having struck fashionable partnerships with fan-favourite series like Bridgerton and Emily in Paris. Its newest is a collaboration is between Japanese streetwear clothing brand A Bathing Ape (BAPE) and the streamer’s most-viewed show to date, Squid Game. The dystopian series, which premiered in September 2021, follows a group of debt-ridden characters who, out of desperation, enter a seemingly harmless competition with a simple premise: play traditional children’s games for the chance to win a cash prize. But after a game of Statues, the players learn that there can only be one winner, and all those who eliminated from the game are murdered — it’s really graphic, FYI.…

André Leon Talley, the former influential Vogue editor, dies at 73

January 19, 2022 at 04:57PM AndrĂ© Leon Talley, who died January 18 at age 73, was the poster boy for a bygone era of fashion media, when the focus was on designers and their craft, and when knowledge of fashion history was a valued asset. “He was a one man style encyclopedia,” Toronto writer Shinan Govani declared on Instagram to mark the death of AndrĂ© Leon Talley. Photography courtesy of Rose Hartman/Getty ImagesWhen he was travelling the runway circuit as an editor for American Vogue, Talley’s assessment of a collection was often a lesson in fashion history, with references to Cristobal Balenciaga’s innovative silhouettes, or how Yves Saint Laurent revolutionized women’s dress. His observations were always delivered with excitement and appreciation, rather than the dry tone of an academic. Everything was, “Fabulous,…
