Mushroom Fashion is Springing Up Everywhere This Season

April 04, 2022 at 05:43PM Of all the new trends that surfaced this season, there’s one in particular that has caught everyone’s attention: mushrooms. From clothing and accessories to beauty, food and interiors, fungi have taken over as everyone’s favourite fashion ingredient.  With sustainability becoming a priority across many industries, brands and designers have discovered the boundless possibilities of the previously overlooked species. According to the American Mushroom Society, mushrooms’ low-energy footprint makes them one of the most sustainably produced foods in the United States. And films such as the Fantastic Fungi have made apparent fungi’s medicinal qualities.  In fashion, brands such as Brandon Maxwell, Acne Studios and Sportmax have incorporated the mushroom into their Spring/Summer 2022 shows, while Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton took inspiration from the interconnecting power of mycelium for her latest collection. On the other hand, Stella McCartney not only made use…

Texture Talk: An Ode to the Cropped Afro

April 01, 2022 at 07:41PM For the past six years, a big, glorious afro had been my signature hairstyle. It really felt like a statement-making reclamation of my Black pride and beauty after years of listening to narrow and toxic beauty ideals and applying chemical relaxer to help permanently straighten my coils as a direct result. And while much of the world was in a holding pattern for the last two years, and stay-at-home COVID orders shuttered beauty salon doors for huge stretches of time, I saw my afro become the true definition of “larger than life.” We’re talking Kaepernick-level. I became a first-time mum during that time, too. I truly see my type 4 curls as a gift from the hair gods, but I won’t lie: sporting a healthy and well-kept large afro makes you work for it in terms of a…

Inside a Sustainable Fashion Collector’s Closet

April 01, 2022 at 03:39PM Sarah Jay’s collection of sustainable and locally made styles had a bit of a brutal beginning. “Early in my career, I had an existential crisis,” admits the Toronto-based celebrity stylist, eco activist and conceiver of the documentary Toxic Beauty. “I just felt like I was drowning in excess. I loved fashion, but I was concerned about where our clothing was coming from and how it was being disposed of.” Al Gore’s 2006 documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, is partially to blame for Jay’s self-reflection. “That film really fact-checked me and opened my mind, but it also coincided with the worsening of my chemical sensitivities,” she says, referring to the by-product of her days submerged in chlorine as a synchronized swimmer and her self-described addiction to hair dye and beauty products. As her health declined, Jay adopted a new and…

Why Are There So Many Wet Shirts in Period Dramas?

March 31, 2022 at 10:07PM A tall, dark and handsome man emerges from a lake wearing a soaking wet, white dress shirt. Sound familiar? If you’ve spent the last few days binge-watching Bridgerton season two, then it should. In episode five, there’s a pivotal swoon-worthy moment in a show built upon swoon-worthy moments where Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) takes an accidental swim while helping Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) out of a boat. It’s cute, full of chemistry and just a little risquĂ©, meaning it perfectly encapsulates the Netflix phenomenon. But is it unique? Not so much. If you’re an avid period drama aficionado like myself, you’ve probably seen more suitors in wet white shirts than you can count: Greg Wise in 1995’s Sense & Sensibility, Dan Stevens in 2008’s Sense & Sensibility, Rupert Friend in Young Victoria, Toby Stephens in Jane Eyre, Aidan…

23 Transitional Coats You Need This Spring

March 30, 2022 at 08:40PM Spring weather is unpredictable. One minute it’s warm and sunny, the next it’s cold and windy (and sometimes snowy). That’s why transitional coats are essential for this confusing time of year. The right outwear will keep you warm and dry without sacrificing your style. Classic trench coats are a must when it comes to spring dressing, and they have been a staple for many decades — think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Catherine Deneuve in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Olivia Pope in Scandal. In recent seasons, leather has become a popular material for light outerwear, while the surge of DIY and naughties fashion made the “small top big pants” silhouette more in vogue. Shorter jackets, such as windbreakers, shackets and bomber jackets, have become favourites among Gen-Z. From classic trench coats and versatile anoraks to sporty letterman jackets, here…

The Corset is Getting a Modern Makeover

March 30, 2022 at 03:59PM The corset is one of history’s most controversial pieces of clothing. And thanks to Bridgerton’s revival of Regency-era fashion, it’s getting a modern-day makeover. Corsets were first constructed as an undergarment to flatten the bust in the 16th century. The following decades saw different variations on the original design emerge, with the most well-known being the waist-cinching bodice depicted in period dramas like Bridgerton. Golda Rosheuvel, Bridgerton season two; Photography courtesy of NetflixThe Netflix series has taken more than a few liberties with its costuming. Exhibit A: the historically inaccurate tightly wound corsets seen on the show’s leading ladies. During the Georgian era in which Bridgerton is set, corsets were actually soft and breathable since dresses had column-like silhouettes that hid curves. Over time, corsets gained a reputation for being oppressive and painful, which some argue is an unfair characterization.…

Why Chris Rock’s Joke About Jada Pinkett Smith’s Shaved Head Struck a Nerve

March 29, 2022 at 08:50PM When Will Smith struck Chris Rock at the Oscars this past Sunday, the slap was seen and heard around the world. Rock made a tasteless joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, saying, “Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see you,” referencing the transformation Demi Moore underwent in the 1997 film G.I. Jane. Will, in turn, made the reckless decision to get violent. Moments after, Smith went up on stage to accept his Best Actor win for King Richard, in which he played Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis legends Venus and Serena. “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” he said. “In this business, you’ve got to be able to have people disrespecting you, and you’ve got to smile and you’ve got to pretend like that’s OK.” The next…
