The Situation Is Dire for Women and Girl in Afghanistan

August 19, 2021 at 09:52PM When the Taliban first took control of Afghanistan in 1996, Murwarid Ziayee was a university student at Kabul University. Studying law and political science, she took her education seriously and was always the first to arrive in class. One morning, toward the end of her final year, she woke up to the news that the Islamist militant group had taken over the streets of Kabul, the nation’s capital city. The Taliban was not allowing anyone to leave their houses or go to school, and she remembers feeling disbelief. She decided to go out anyway because a classmate had borrowed her notebook and she needed it back to study. “[I was] fully covered: the whole hijab from top to toe in black. I also covered my eyes,” Ziayee says, adding that she didn’t know much about the Taliban or…

Old Navy Dropped a Pumpkin Spice Tie-Dye Line, So Obviously I Bought This $20 Tee

August 19, 2021 at 09:10PM Yeah, yeah, I know it’s August, but I’m ready for fall right now. I want to sip lattes and crunch leaves under my feet, you know what I mean? While the weather is still warm, I’m exercising my love of autumn however I can. Exhibit A: Check out my brand-new Old Navy Loose Vintage Tie-Dye Easy Tee ($20) I just bought. The site just released a bunch of new pieces in this pumpkin spice tie-dye colorway that’s perfect for the season. The tee itself is an incredibly great quality - the soft-washed cotton-jersey fabric feels so much more expensive than it is. I also think the cut is modern and cool - the drop-shoulder sleeves are very on trend. The fit is on the looser size, so size down if you like a tighter fit. Keep reading to…

Lizzo Is Dealing With Hateful Social Media Comments — Again

August 19, 2021 at 08:53PM Since the release of the music video for her new song “Rumors” on August 13, Lizzo has had the whole internet talking. The video, featuring Cardi B, is inspired by ancient Greek art, with references to Disney’s animated Hercules movie — namely the film’s five “muses,” a group of Black goddesses famous for their harmonic singing parts throughout the film. “Rumors” is about addressing criticism, hate and, of course, the spreading of false information. But despite its empowering messaging, it’s resulted in Lizzo being on the receiving end of hateful comments, yet again. In an interview with Good Morning America on August 18, the singer spoke candidly about how cruel comments on social media are impacting her. “People are like, ‘don’t let them see you with your head down, sis!’ My head is always up. Even when I’m…

Old Navy Is No Longer Segregating Their Plus-Size Section

August 19, 2021 at 07:32PM Old Navy is making major strides towards size inclusivity. And the sister company to Gap just announced that they are doing more than simply expanding their size range. Beginning on August 20, the Old Navy BODEQUALITY initiative will launch in an effort to democratize style and normalize all bodies. In addition to stocking sizes 0-28 in all storefronts (and size 30 online), the brand will remove the term “plus size” altogether, with women’s apparel congregating in one seamless experience and Old Navy offering all women’s styles in every size. “We saw an opportunity to meaningfully change the women’s shopping experience by making it more inclusive regardless of size,” said Nancy Green, president and CEO of Old Navy, in a statement. “BODEQUALITY is not a one-time campaign, but a full transformation of our business in service to our customers…

Butterfly Prints Are The Latest Evolution Of The Y2K Fashion Revival

August 19, 2021 at 06:30PM You’d be hard pressed to name a fashion trend of the beloved early aughts era that hasn’t yet bounced back in 2021. Colorful Y2K-inspired rings are the accessory of the summer, halters and tube tops are again the key to a proper going out ensemble, and celebrities such as Emily Ratajkowski just may be able to make low-rise jeans stick. Now, the return of the butterfly print is the latest trend to hit the roster and lets just say, Mariah Carey would be proud. As unpredictable as fashion trends may be in this digital age (no one saw the undoing of skinny jeans coming), the return of the poppy, fun-loving print actually makes total sense. From pastel checkered prints, to the now reign of the psychedelic motif, slowly coming out on the other side of lockdown means the…

Hold on to Your Fringe: Rodeo Wear Is Having a Moment

August 19, 2021 at 05:55PM Yee-haw: fashion is having a rodeo renaissance. Suddenly, glamorous Western wear is everywhere. The trend has been trotting along for a while now, but it took off on a full gallop in summer 2021. Dua Lipa kicked things off in June with her “Love Again” video featuring pony hair outerwear, pieces from the Levi’s x Miu Miu collab, light up lassos, and a phalanx of line-dancing backup dancers wearing rodeo clown makeup. Then it was BTS who saddled up with their life-affirming “Permission to Dance” music video in July. The septet from Seoul have always been swoon-worthy fashion icons but, wow, Cowboy Bangtan just hits differently. j-hope in chaps! SUGA in leather suspenders! Jin in a bolo tie (with a dangerous amount of bare chest showing)! RM and V in wide-brimmed cowboy hats! Jungkook in Johnny Cash-approved, all-black…
