SZA is serving up nostalgia with her latest outfit. On Dec. 1, the “S.O.S.” singer wore a unique cutout dress made of old college t-shirts for her “Saturday Night Live” rehearsal. “Villain era,” she captioned the carousel on Instagram.
Styled by Alejandra Hernandez, the fitted cutout-covered midi dress was made by KHIRY creative director and multimedia artist Jameel Mohammed. Dartmouth College, University of Pennsylvania, and Vanderbilt University were just a few of the schools represented throughout. She paired the collage-like piece with a forest green hat featuring an upside-down smiley face.
This isn’t the Grammy-winning artist’s first time dabbling with upcycled materials. Last year, she collaborated with the climate innovation hub Slow Factory to launch Ctrl Fishing Company, her own sustainable clothing brand. “We created our own fabric based off quilted pieces of landfill fabric in different colorways,” she told POPSUGAR at the time. “We’re just trying to make sh*t that I really want to wear, but also in a way that doesn’t f*ck up our carbon footprint or my karma, and that’s really difficult… . It’s all literally made from recycled clothing, clothing that was already thrown away and headed to the landfill, not even clothing that was slated to be purchased again.”
In addition to her colorful cutout dress, the 33-year-old artist also wore a fuzzy Y2K-approved bucket hat and New York Mets jacket on the “SNL” set while prepping for her Dec. 3 appearance on the comedy sketch show with host Keke Palmer. If this is just her fashion behind the scenes, we can’t wait to see what she wears on stage this weekend.
