Rihanna’s maternity style is guided by one principle: body positivity. Ever since last week’s announcement that she and boyfriend A$AP Rocky are expecting their first child, the Savage X Fenty founder has brought her sartorial A-game to maternity wear, donning bold pieces that exude undeniable confidence. First, there was the oversize vintage Chanel coat, which was intentionally left unbuttoned at the bottom, followed by a bump-baring lace-up Jean Paul Gaultier cardigan. And most recently, while heading out to dinner in Los Angeles, the business mogul was seen in a plunging brown tie-front crop top that opened on – you guessed it – the belly. She finished her look with low-rise blue jeans and a vintage cheetah-print fur coat, accessorizing with a Dior saddle bag, an Awake camo trucker, and Tom Ford padlock heels. Her outfit was decidedly on trend: the tiny top and low-slung jeans cater to the Y2K fashion movement, while the vintage coat taps into the nostalgic mood that’s been dominating the fashion industry as of late.
Rihanna’s unconventional maternity look rewrites the rules of what pregnant people are supposed to wear. She isn’t afraid to wear revealing silhouettes that aren’t traditionally associated with pregnancy fashion. What these sartorial choices tell us is that the singer is fully embracing her new chapter and doing it her way. As a close source told PEOPLE, “She’s loving all the changes to her body during pregnancy and has always celebrated pregnant women in her runway shows for Fenty.” Indeed Rihanna famously sent a pregnant Slick Woods down the Savage X Fenty runway wearing pasties and lingerie in September 2018. In the same show, a pregnant dancer wore a sheer plunging bodysuit and matching elbow-length gloves. Now that she’s the one expecting, Rihanna continues to embrace wildly creative and undeniably feminine looks every time she steps out. Ahead, relive her latest fashion moment and shop similar pieces.
