The Fashion Moments That Defined 2021

December 14, 2021 at 02:10PM This was the year that reignited our love for fashion. After the truly heinous 2020 - a deeply traumatizing year that gave us all emotional and mental scars - 2021 felt like a cautious step closer to being OK again. There was a collective feeling of “We all made it through the worst of it!” A global exhale of sorts that felt OK (or at least a little more OK) enough to celebrate silly, superficial things like fashion and pop culture again. Red carpets were back! It was OK to laugh at memes! Fashion Weeks returned! Celebrity couple debuts were no longer relegated to just Instagram posts, so we were allowed to celebrate Bennifer 2.0 the way we were truly meant to: through glorious paparazzi yacht pics from Saint-Tropez! Designers pivoted from cozy, homebound, tie-dye sweatsuits into ultra-aesthetics…

Zendaya Stuns in a Slinky Spiderweb Slip Dress and a Gothic Venetian Mask

December 14, 2021 at 02:08PM Zendaya’s stylist Image Architect Law Roach is such a master of his craft. For the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere in Los Angeles, Zendaya arrived in a slinky, cobweb-covered slip dress that looked like it was hanging on by a thread. The dress complemented her costar Tom Holland’s sleek double-breasted Prada suit, with the couple matching in Christian Louboutin footwear. Zendaya’s beige, lace slip dress covered in black beaded spiderweb embroidery is a custom design by Valentino. Roach completed the look with sparkling, black pointed-toe Louboutin heels, jewels by Bulgari, and a black lace masquerade mask. Zendaya’s straight back braids, navy blue eyeliner, and wine-red tipped manicure added subtle texture and color to her outfit and the overall “spider theme.” Holland matched his date’s beige gown by wearing a double-breasted brown silk suit that was custom designed by…

22 Very Old Trends I’m Still Wearing Today

December 14, 2021 at 05:00AM I’m a huge fan of ‘70s fashion—the era created a host of trends that still stand up today, whether you realise they’re from that time or not. Think of our current obsession with bright over-the-knee boots, folk-inspired printed dresses, velvet and corduroy, boho blouses, midi skirts and so on. While the '70s sweep over the runways every couple of seasons, there’s always a hint of it on the streets if you look closely.Think of the iconic designer names that were indelibly marked into history during this decade, like Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld and Diane von Furstenberg. Also, during this period, mass-market, trend-driven fashion was more readily available. Barbara Hulanicki’s Biba kick-started the idea in London a decade earlier, alongside boutiques such as Bus Stop, and cool, connected girls were able to switch up their looks more readily, which likely led…

7 Non-Boring Ways to Wear Jeans This Winter

December 14, 2021 at 08:00AM As cold weather sets in, it’s no surprise a lot of us will take the easy route and reach for our reliable wardrobe essentials. You know, the blazer that’ll never let you down—from work to weekend plans—and the white T-shirt that has been worn, and washed, more times than we could count. Then there are jeans. While skinny jeans have taken a back seat this year (no one wants to feel restricted in super-tight denim), other styles are leading as the starting point to every great winter outfit we’re finally ready to wear. Sure, jeans are an easy option when getting dressed, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. And we’re going to show you a whole host of simple (but again, not-boring) ways to wear some of the best pairs, from the flared jeans that’ll create…

Top Hairstylists Have Spoken—These Are the Best Cuts for Every Face Shape

December 14, 2021 at 08:00AM Within the ever-colliding stratospheres of fashion and beauty, “rules” have become a bit passĂ©, if not obsolete altogether. Gone are the days when we’d refuse to wear white after Labor Day or dismiss navy and black as an ill-conceived colour pairing. Currently, we feel inspired to dye our hair a demurely shocking shade of lavender. A hot-pink eyelid is cooler than yesteryear’s smoked-out cat eye, and we’re even experimenting with crystal-studded manicures and cute-but-clashing polish shades. Our point? It’s an exciting time to be in fashion and beauty, and more so than ever before, our hair, makeup and fashion aesthetic reflect that.Hair, especially, has been the comeback kid of 2021. Previously old-fashioned styles like the mullet have been artistically resurrected, and we currently own more scrunchies, hair claws and butterfly clips than we did circa 1999. Impressive. That said, one…

The Holy-Grail Product My 73-Year-Old Mum Uses to Make Her Look 20 Years Younger

December 14, 2021 at 08:00AM I’m pretty lucky. Not only do I have a job where I get to experience, write, and learn about the newest and most exciting products, treatments, and trends hitting the beauty industry, but I also get to interview and get to know the artists and experts who execute and create them. That said, I also feel lucky to have a beauty-loving, 73-year-old makeup artist mom who I can consult about anything and everything. (My poor father never gets a word in when we have a family catch-up call. Sorry, Dad!) Being a 73-year-old product junkie and also a Tucson-based makeup expert who specialises in educating older women about makeup and skincare, my beautiful mum knows a thing or two when it comes to choosing the best products for mature skin. Oftentimes (but not always), when I try to foist my favourite…

This “Old” Trend Is Suddenly So Popular Again

December 14, 2021 at 08:00AM Social media has changed the rapidity of trends. Traditionally, new trends would start and end with each passing season. Now, however, with the world at our fingertips, trends can be born quite literally overnight. All it takes is for a celebrity to upload a snap of their latest outfit or an influencer their new purchase, and you’ve got the fashion equivalent of a domino effect. As such, it takes something pretty special to withstand the turnover, which makes what we’re going to discuss today all the more impressive indeed. The bouclĂ© trend has lasted not just a year, not just a decade, but over 60 years. The fabrication, woven from a specific type of looped wool yarn and derived from the French term for “ringed” or “curled,” has become synonymous with high-end style. And though it has been used to create clothes and…

I’ve Found My Perfect Christmas Dress (and It’s From Marks and Spencer)

December 14, 2021 at 06:03AM Some might say there’s no such thing as the perfect dress and that you’re always sacrificing on something—perhaps the colour or the fabric choice. I know I’m fussy when it comes to choosing my own frocks, too. What can I say? I have high expectations. But even I’m having a hard time picking fault with Marks and Spencer’s latest dress offering. I’m going to make a bold claim: This just might be the best dress I’ve seen this season, if not this entire year. Part of M&S’s ongoing collaboration with Ghost, the dresses born out of this partnership were always going to pique my interest. I already own a handful of Ghost dresses, and they’re some of my favourites in my wardrobe. Coupled with the fact that M&S is one of my go-to high-street shopping destinations, we’re already off to a…
