December 16, 2021 at 06:00AM Growing up, the bottles of body sprays, lotions, butters and eau de toilettes that lined my bathroom vanity were far sweeter than a desert-filled episode of The Great British Bake Off. My rotation typically included Britney Spears’s Fantasy (or Curious); a pure-sugar scent that, not surprisingly, was called Pink Sugar; and anything else my collection of glossy magazines was advertising. If it smelled like a frosted cupcake with sprinkles, I was—without a doubt—wearing it. I’ll always love unapologetically sweet scents, but now my tastes have graduated to fragrance blends that are warm and woody or grounded with spices, leathers or classic florals. I don’t wear foundation every day and am pretty nonplussed about cheek products, but tell me about a new lipstick or eye shadow, and I’m all ears.Doing your eye makeup has such transformative power, and other than a bold lipstick, it’s definitely the thing that makes the biggest difference when it comes to amplifying an already-glowy makeup look. While a cream eye shadow is good for a quick simple look, there’s no doubt that the choice of multiple shades is the best for creating a variety of looks, from a deep, dark smoky eye to a fun, vibrant hit of colour. This is why I like to mix it up every now and then and revisit stores that I haven’t frequented for a few seasons. For me this winter this manifested in a browse of Jigsaw, Whistles and Karen Millen’s new-in categories. Jigsaw in particular has taken-on a new style identity in recent years, still holding onto its timeless approach to design, but infusing pieces with a contemporary energy via bold prints and unusual silhouettes. Whistles’s current collection is jam-packed with elevated basics, that firmly fall under the ‘low-effort’ category, yet will add interest via a pointed collar or dramatically pleated fabric.
