For the fashion house’s Spring/Summer 2022 couture collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri, creative director of Dior’s women’s collections, paid tribute to the atelier. In the garden of the Musée Rodin in Paris, embroidery was not “merely a decorative detail” but an emblem of the craftsmanship of haute couture. A signature of the collection, embroidered tights can be seen under a grisaille-bedecked grey suit, evening dresses and draped leotards. January 24, 2022 at 07:36PM Manfred Thierry Mugler never really played it safe. The French designer, who died January 23 at age 73, opened his eponymous Paris boutique in 1978. At that time, he had already worked for several designers and created his own collection, Café de Paris. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Mugler’s popularity grew as his penchant for sultry futurism, hyper-feminine glamour (think broad shoulders and cinched waists with a distinctly sci-fi feel) and theatrics that bordered on drag rewrote the traditional catwalk.
