If they ever did see the light of day, it was only while I grabbed a package off of my porch or took out the trash. I just didn’t understand their appeal. But since May, the country has been grappling with the (reawakened) history of residential schools and discovering hundreds of unmarked graves buried under former sites across Canada. In such a time of grief and sadness, a very welcome bright light has been the inauguration of Mary Simon as Canada’s first Indigenous Governor General.
