11 Brands That Are Helping Us Rethink the Concept of Second-Hand

September 10, 2021 at 06:08AM In 2012, when I studied abroad at the University of Texas at Austin, I became somewhat obsessed with shopping second-hand. During the time that I probably should have spent in the library, my friends and I would trawl through the city’s unique thrift stores, tracking down and trying on the best items we could find. Whether it was a 1980s–style Christian Dior purple power suit complete with covered buttons and padded shoulders or a simple floral cotton dress that looked like it belonged on the set of Dawson’s Creek, we were always elated with our diamond-in-the-rough finds. While I am embarrassed to admit it, at the time, my second-hand shopping habit had very little to do with sustainability or the environment and much more to do with budget and perceived cool factor. Of course, I now know those two elements do not have to be mutually…

Cos’s Sellout Midi Dress is Back in a Very Stylish New Colourway

September 10, 2021 at 06:07AM As an editor at Who What Wear I spend hours upon hours looking at new-in sections, and so over the years have developed a knack for spotting products that will sell out or have huge appeal with our readers. A few months ago there was one dress in particular which I had a feeling was destined for cult status—a ruched midi dress from COS. It came in two colourways and featured a simple 90s-style midi silhouette, however the ruched detailing on the waist and fuller skirt made it a little more relaxed. Well, I hate to brag, but the style was out of stock within a month—I even bought the black iteration myself. We thought you might like to know that the dress is back in a very AW21 shade of cobalt blue. And yes, the entire team is in love. Scroll down…

How to Shop for Vintage Jeans, According to an Expert

September 10, 2021 at 06:00AM Second-hand shopping has never been more popular, and vintage jeans are one of the biggest categories people are searching for. According to the Business of Fashion, “Before the pandemic hit, the resale market was on track to double from $24 billion in 2019 to $51 billion by 2024. … This growth may very well accelerate.” Overall, retro items are clearly in demand, but there’s something about denim that attracts people even more. It shouldn’t be surprising. This year is all about denim, and the most in-demand styles are based around vintage silhouettes. But it’s more than that. “Our category of vintage jeans are significantly increasing +278% of sales and +254% of deposits compared to last year,” says Vestiaire Collective. While there’s definitely been a bigger increase in searches for vintage denim more recently, online chat rooms and Reddit threads have been dedicated to hunting…

The One Outfit Formula You’ll See Everywhere This Autumn

September 10, 2021 at 06:00AM For all its failings, Instagram remains an unending source of fashion inspiration for me. Yes, there’s always a risk that our wardrobes become a physical manifestation of a social media algorithm, but if we can resist the temptation to copy and paste our style, there are so many feeds that can spark creativity. Case in point: It was during one of my scrolling sessions that I came across a simple autumn outfit pairing—baggy jeans and a blazer—that had me rooting through my wardrobe in an attempt to re-create it that very day. The best thing about this look is that many of us, myself included, may well have the components for it already sitting in our wardrobes. For me, this manifested in a pair of baggy jeans from sustainable denim brand Boyish thrown together with an old checked blazer and white tee from Arket. It’s all about embracing that slouch. Disarmingly simple, yes, but…

Trust Me—These 23 Short Haircuts Require Barely Any Upkeep

September 10, 2021 at 06:00AM One of the most common misconceptions about short hair is how time-consuming the styling and upkeep can be. Turns out it’s a myth as old as time, and we’re here to put an end to it. Just like some long hairstyles can look lifeless when not styled, so too can shorter hair. But opting for a shorter style doesn’t mean you’ll be glued to your stylist’s chair every week. In fact, the right short haircut for you will depend a lot on your texture, the condition of your hair and your lifestyle. For instance, if you have very curly hair, then opting for a sleek bob will require a lot of heat and therefore way more in-salon treatments to repair and restore your strands.“Every head of hair is different, so it’s important to have a thorough consultation with your stylist on the easiest upkeep for…

September 10, 2021 at 06:00AM Whether you’re a shoe hoarder or a jacket fanatic, a dress lover or a bag addict, it’s safe to say that there is an independent brand to cater to your wardrobe needs. Thanks to word of mouth and the power of social media, theever-diversifying fashion industry is finally allowing niche labels to come to the fore. Big brands don’t have a monopoly over the landscape, as many customers are wanting to invest in original design and lesser-known styles.  Sadly, some of these labels have been hit by the global pandemic, and as a publication, we’re doing our very best to support the talent we love in any way possible. That’s why we’ve dedicated our end-of-month shopping gallery to these independent brands. Honestly, we were spoilt for choice, and we wish we could include every brand we came across online (although that would turn into a long article), but we managed to…
