I Haven’t Worn Eye Shadow in Months, But I Tried My Hand at Colourful Eyeliner

September 15, 2021 at 06:00AM When daily commutes to the office were more of a regular thing, the best part of my morning routine was easily putting on my makeup. Beyond the transformational aspect, for me, applying it is also downright therapeutic. But, as working from home became the new norm, my makeup collection understandably started to collect dust. Until very recently, it’s been almost a year since I picked up a blending brush and thoroughly dove into my eye shadow palettes. I used to relish experimenting with different colours and glittery textures, but admittedly my skills have become a little rusty. To ease into the full swing of vibrant eye shadow looks I decided to turn to something a little more beginner-friendly.  Colourful eyeliner has all of the fun of eye shadow, yet significantly easier to put together than blending five different types of shadows. I found that I could let my imagination run…

I Just Tried on Autumn’s 8 Biggest Cult Buys

September 15, 2021 at 05:17AM Perhaps it’s just me, but there seems to be a tentative sense of optimism at play as we enter autumn 2021. Maybe it’s the fact that many of us (although not all, of course) will have more freedoms than we did last year, or it’s the promise of holidays, weddings and birthdays to come. Or, perhaps, it's just the small things that have shifted. For me, as a fashion lover, it’s being reunited with my favourite items of clothing that have sat dormant at the back of my wardrobe for most of 2020. And that’s not to mention the abundance of endorphin-boosting prints and colours that have taken over the autumn collections this year. It's with this spirit that I’ve approached my cult autumn buys edit. I wanted to select items that encapsulate this particular 2021 brand of joie de vivre: fun, fancy, a little bit frivolous, and yet still a…

The Coolest Personal Shoppers on the Only Autumn Items That Matter

September 15, 2021 at 05:17AM Who does a fashion editor trust for style advice? These days, I’m all about tapping the luxury world’s top personal shoppers. They’re the ones with direct lines to the biggest and coolest brands, the gurus who can track down a special sold-out item when the rest of us gave up months ago, and the inside experts getting a detailed view of what people with big budgets (both celebs and non-celebs) are putting first dibs on ahead of a new season. They are, in essence, a more connected link between what’s being created and what consumers are actually buying in real time, and with the kind of access they have to fabulous things, you can bet your bottom dollar they are fussy as hell. Ergo, their recommendations should be accepted as gospel. The prominence of the personal shopper is rising, and the concept is diversifying. Once upon a time, I thought…

I Test Drove The Frankie Shop’s New Arrivals, and What the Hell They’re Awesome

September 15, 2021 at 05:00AM Welcome to The Great Try-On. With fall on the horizon, we seized the opportunity to try on some of the best fall pieces from some of your favourite brands, documenting the process along the way. We believe that the most foolproof way to shop online is to see an item IRL and to read candid reviews, so we hope that this leads you to some successful autumn purchases. I felt like I won the jackpot when our senior editor Allyson Payer told me I was the lucky editor who would get to test drive The Frankie Shop’s new arrivals. It’s a fashion person’s brand (industry insiders are very loyal followers), but their minimal-cool aesthetic is approachable to a wider spectrum of people too. I also love how the brand feels perfectly current, but is steers away from super trendy. In other words, once you…

I Found My Perfect Pair of Jeans—Here Are 5 Ways I’m Styling Them for Autumn

September 15, 2021 at 05:00AM I’ve often gravitated towards a more minimalist style, so my wardrobe consists of chic basics that I can rewear. While my style tends to vary based on my mood, I like wearing neutrals the most, as I find it easier to mix and match different styles together to dress a piece of clothing up or down. That said, the item I want to talk about today is white jeans. It can often be a divisive piece. For a long time, a lot of people have been frightened of wearing them, not least because they can get dirty quickly. They can also be off-putting because some are unsure of how to style them and believe they’re only good for the summer months. But I have one pair of white jeans, and they are so versatile and have taken me through each season.…

I Need a Telescope to See All the “Celestial Crystals” on Anok Yai’s Met Gala Gown

September 15, 2021 at 01:40AM The 2019 Met Gala’s “Camp” theme still had a prominent influence on many of this year’s attendees, but many of those who understood the 2021 Met Gala’s “In America” assignment took inspiration from some of history’s most influential stars. Much like Yara Shahidi showing up in a head-to-toe Dior outfit inspired by Josephine Baker, model Anok Yai also gave a nod to the 1920s entertainer and civil rights activist. Channeling pique “Old Hollywood” glam, Anok posed on the Costume Institute steps in a figure-hugging Oscar de La Renta dress from the Spring 2022 collection. While Anok and Yara’s outfits couldn’t have been more different, both paid an honorable tribute to the Jazz Age star. Described as a “skimming celestial crystal gown” by the Oscar de La Renta Instagram page, the dress features a plunging neckline and crystal designs…

Nikkie Tutorials’s Met Gala Gown Was an Homage to Transgender Activist Marsha P. Johnson

September 15, 2021 at 12:55AM The 2021 Met Gala was packed with celebrities making impassioned fashion statments and YouTuber Nikkie Tutorials, aka Nikkie de Jager, took the opportunity to pay tribute to one of the most iconic figures in LGBTQ+ history: transgender activist Marsha P. Johnson. Nikkie’s turquoise tulle gown, courtesy of Edwin Oudshoorn Couture, was embellished with pink, red, and yellow flowers that beautifully matched her golden headpieces brimming with handmade silk flowers, a nod to Marsha’s signature flower crown. Further down, the dress, styled by Marja Bennenbroek and Brandon M. Garr, was pinned with a large teal and gold bow embroidered with the words “Pay It No Mind,” the meaning behind Marsha’s middle initial and her typical response to questions about her gender. “Marsha P. Johnson paved the way for so many of us, and I hope I made my community…
