The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out in rainy Wolverhampton today for a series of engagements and proved, yet again, that denim is not the only way to pull together an easy, chic outfit. Wearing a look that was very reminiscent of a navy ensemble she chose on a royal tour last year (more on those looks below) she assembled a fitted coat over a polka-dot, contrast-collar blouse and with a trouser style that is fast becoming her signature: tailored flares.

On Kate Middleton: Tory Burch Silk Satin Polka Dot Blouse; Jigsaw trousers. In a couple of styling moves that are now recognisably very HRH, Kate chose to go tonal (a move that makes any outfit simpler), to add in some classic pearl earrings and to ensure that her wide-leg trousers were (probably) tailored just so, in order to sit neatly above her pointed-toe shoes and to only just scrape the ground. The puddle-leg look is probably not considered to be very regal. What is particularly cool though? I think it’s highly likely that these are the very same navy trousers from Jigsaw (where Kate worked once upon a time) that she has worn on numerous occasions over the past few years.

Of course, no current K-Mids get-up would be complete without one of her matchy-matchy printed face masks and today she wore a ditsy floral number that looked a lot like a classic Liberty print.

Last year, Kate Middleton and Prince William were been active on Zoom calls with charities throughout the pandemic, but eventually they decided to take the show on the road. They embarked on a socially-distanced and masked train tour to support people and programs that have helped with COVID-19 relief efforts. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travelled to Scotland and Wales—and yes, they really did take the train.

Middleton wore a total of five different outfits during the tour, including some festive Christmas-themed looks. But my favourite was when she wore wide-leg trousers with a sleek coat and heels. I’m obsessed with wide-leg trousers and would gladly trade my skinny jeans for them because they look so polished without trying hard. Plus, they’re great for elongating your frame when worn with heels. Scroll down to see every single train tour outfit and shop the wide-leg trend for yourself.
