If You Invest in One Trend This Autumn, Make it This One

If I had to choose one item of clothing to wear for the entirety of autumn 2021, it would have to be dungarees. Surprising, perhaps, given the fact that I usually err towards a more polished aesthetic with my outfits, however I cannot overstate the versatility of this one-piece wonder. Dungarees may have originally been created for workmen (complete with tool-holding bib), but these days they come in all shapes and sizes, and able to be styled in a plethora of ways.

You know when an item of clothing appears on the Chanel runway that it’s officially graduated into the upper echelons of the fashion world, but I’m not sure I would’ve expected dungarees to be on that list. The iconic brand sent out a pair in pink tweed, which were layered over a long-sleeved printed top and styled with heels, perfectly exemplifying the elevated powers held within this casual staple. My dungaree fabric of choice is classic denim, however I’ve enjoyed playing around with different layers and accessories: I’ll opt for a gingham blouse and cowboy boots for a casual weekend look, then swap in a silken shirt and heels for a more formal spin. Blue denim is, of course, the more traditional iteration, however I’ve also fallen for white, which brings a more Parisian-inspired twist. Just add a Breton top and plimsoles a la Francesca Saffari.

This is a trend that is primarily to be found on the high street, and it’s brands such as Mango, Free People and Whistles that are leading the way with dungaree style. I personally prefer the wide leg iterations, but you can also find slim leg styles, cropped fits and kick-flares, so you can adapt the trend to whatever silhouette you feel best in. Scroll down to see and shop the dungarees I’m bookmarking for autumn.

White dungarees and a Breton top is such a simple combo yet packs a real punch.

A pair of pinstripe dungarees will look supremely cool with a pussy bow blouse and Converse.

Add impact to your dungaree look with head-to-toe colour, as seen on the supremely stylish Sara Brown.

I plan on recreating this white-on-white Laura Jackson look this autumn. Just add lace-up boots for a utilitarian finish.
