I Tried Old Navy’s Bestselling Trench Coat and It’s Worth the Hype

September 07, 2022 at 07:39PM

Everyone needs a good trench coat in their fall wardrobe. Admittedly, I only recently bought one after borrowing and not returning my mom’s years ago (for the record, I’m not proud of this). But I’m happy to report that I recently purchased the Old Navy Water-Resistant Tie-Belt Trench Coat ($85), and everything I wanted: chic, timeless, and versatile. Ahead, find out everything you need to know about the brand’s bestseller before you add it to your shopping cart.

What I Like About This Trench Coat

I scooped up this trench in my usual size medium, choosing the ivory color dubbed “Wish Bone.” Right upon slipping it on, I knew it was a keeper. For starters, I fell in love with the length, which hits just below my knee. And there’s no shortage of stylish details, from the tortoiseshell buckle and buttoned epaulettes to the button-tab cuffs and storm flap in the back.

I’m also a big fan of the material. While it’s been too hot where I live to wear it out and about just yet, I’m confident that its smooth texture is firm enough to hold its shape in a breeze yet soft enough that it’ll feel comfortable even after hours of wear. It’s also water-resistant, making it ideal for days when the weather looks questionable.

What’s Worth Noting

The first thing worth noting about this trench coat is that it’s slightly oversize, which I like because it means it won’t feel tight over fall sweaters – and IMO, it makes it look more fashion-forward, too. But some shoppers intentionally sized up to achieve a roomy fit and found that they were “swimming in it.” The takeaway: order your usual size for a slightly oversized fit and a size down for a more fitted look.

Another thing worth flagging is that this trench coat is really lightweight and born to be a thin layer of outerwear. For that reason, it makes a great transitional piece as temperatures start to get chilly and it will also keep you from getting overheated when layered over a warm sweater. Nonetheless, a few reviewers “wish the material had weight to it.”
