Is there really anything more fabulous than feathers? It’s a rhetorical question because, of course, the answer is no. For me it always summons glittering visions of silver screen Hollywood starlets and the sort of unapologetically glamorous matriarchs who wear their diamonds to bed. Feathers are frivolous, yes, but they are also escapist, fun and guaranteed to put you in the party mood, whether you’re in a cocktail bar or lounging on the sofa.
Fashion brands such as 16Arlington, The Sleeper and Taller Marmo have helped to bring feather-trimmed pieces into the mainstream over the last couple of years, and I have been a vocal supporter from the start. I wouldn’t exactly consider myself to be an extravagant dresser, but when it comes to party-wear I can’t resist a little bit of ‘extra’. For example, at my 30th birthday party a few weeks ago I rented a green 16Arlington midi dress from Hurr, which came with feather-trimmed sleeves, and boy did I feel fancy. And, despite the ubiquity of The Sleeper’s pyjama sets, they remain firmly at the top of my Net-a-Porter wishlist.Â
Unsurprisingly, it is mostly designer brands that have committed to the feather party trend, however you can find some affordable iterations from the likes of Zara (you’d never guess this sequinned mini was from the high-street) and Karen Millen, and also don’t forget to check out Vestiaire Collective and Depop for secondhand steals.Â
If some of the feather-trimmed gowns and two-pieces are a little too much for you then I would also recommend checking out the feathered accessories, particularly shoes, which are a great way to add glamour and interest to a more pared-back party dress or suit. This Olivia Von Halle pair would look so cool with a slouchy velvet suit—stylish and comfortable, what more could you want?
