Watch Julia Fox Turn a Beach Towel Into a Cutout Minidress

In Julia Fox’s latest fashion experiment, the 32-year-old model managed to transform a blue Hawaii-print beach towel with hibiscus flowers into a minidress. Fox posted the DIY to her TikTok and Instagram pages, dubbing the makeshift creation “end of the world fashion.” In the video, she expertly showed fans how to create a hole for the head and for the legs, folding up the excess fabric and pinning it at the back after stepping into the “dress.”
While she wore opaque black tights and a casual graphic tee for her initial fitting, Fox later revealed the final look, twisting the dress so there’s an opening at the front to achieve a stomach cutout. She accessorized with leather opera-length gloves, a top-handle bag from Rare Romance, knee-high, pointed toe boots, and black sunglasses. These statement accessories are fitting for her avant-garde wardrobe, curated with the help of stylist Briana Andalore.
Fox noted that towels have had a lasting presence on the runway, a trend Vogue forecasted in 2020 while reporting on blanket dressing’s history (see: Acne Studio and JW Anderson’s spring 2015 shows). She summarizes her project with a note of approval: “Anyway, I think it’s really chic,” she said, showing off her ensemble from all angles.
Ahead, shop similar towels to craft a minidress just like Fox’s. Then, check out the voluminous metallic foil Zac Posen gown she wore to the New York City Ballet gala on Sept. 28, yet another adventure in repurposing unexpected materials to inspire her wardrobe.
