If you’re still holding out for that second August heatwave, then you might want to look away now because I’m about to rain on your parade. (Quite literally—have you seen the weather outside?) I’ve always been drawn towards the enveloping silhouettes of autumn, partly because I can’t stand the sweaty logistics that come with heatwave dressing but also because there’s so much more creative potential in layering. I find that there’s only so much you can do with a summer dress.

Autumn is a time to experiment with statement jackets, create unexpected pairings with blouses and jumpers and give your midi dresses an edge with chunky boots and equally chunky knits. So yes, it might only be July, but I’m already scouting out the cold-weather outfits that I plan on re-creating the moment the mercury drops.

Many of my chosen looks centre on tailored hero pieces, such as wide-leg trousers or a colour-pop blazer. The key is to dress them down with casual staples, such as denim, white tees or ballet flats. At the top of my list is Linda Tol’s super-simple, but also super-chic, knitted tank and black trousers.
